Should Immigrants to the USA learn English?

Postby Gallup » Tue Mar 25, 2014 9:37 am

Another simple question. Should Immigrants to the USA learn English? Should they be forced to take English classes? And who would pay for them?

I think that, yes, immigrants to the US should learn to speak English. That doesn't mean they can't speak their native language. Rather, it means they can better participate in the USA's economy. If you know a county's language, you have a leg up on those who don't. I would also make the classes optional, and paid for by the government.

Yes they should for the benefit of themselves and those around them. Communication is essential, always.
Yes.

They'd probably find it useful to do so. Unless they can already speak English, in which case learning it again would be the very definition of futility.
Should they be forced to take English classes?

No.

They should, but they shouldn't be forced to.

I support peace in Israel and Palestine. The governments and people in power on all sides are an absolute disgrace, and their unwillingness to pursue peace is a disservice to the people they are meant to be serving. The status quo is not simply untenable; it is unquestionably unacceptable.

I can think of a number of people who appear to know English but would benefit greatly from a remedial course. ;)

No, there is no correlation between speaking English, and being a law abiding citizen, which is the minimal requirement that I hold all American citizens to.

It's not like they have a choice. They are going to learn English, regardless if the American government encourages them or not.
Your nation is like a son. What it does right is your merit, as well as what it does wrong is your fault. When you praise it, be lucid and avoid exaggeration. Praising it too much can make it indolent. On the other hand, when you criticize it, be harsh, but do not ridicule it. Do your best to improve it, not through derision or disdain, but through good examples and dedication.

More on topic, I think Gallup's proposal is reasonable. Immigrants should be encouraged to learn English and I have no problem with the government footing the bill for the classes.

Isn't learning how to speak English in their best interests? They need to be able to communicate with Americans if they want to live in the USA.

What does speaking English have to do with the ability to follow our nation's law?

Yeah, that seems about my opinion. If they're compulsory, they should be paid for by the government.

With other Americans who speak the same language they speak?

There are english literacy volunteers. I myself got a TEFL certificate and was a volunteer English teacher for African refugees in the US for over a year. I did free private tutoring on an individual basis and met people from Mali, Rwanda, etc.

Should they learn English though? I guess it probably is in their interest, but if there was a second language such as Esperanto being used, I wouldnt be mind that either, after all it is easier to learn and appeals more to immigrants or refugees that may consider English an imperialist colonial language.

Yes; if you immigrate to any country, you should always learn that country's language.

People who move to other countries generally do so because they want better living conditions. I don't think they can find that in impoverished ghettos.

Considering the vast majority of the United States speaks English...

Perhaps encouraged and modestly subsidized for less able groups, but not required.

Some Americans speak languages other than English. Ergo communicating with Americans does not require speaking English.

Only ethnic communities aren't impoverished ghettos, nor are what pass off as impoverish ghettos in America somehow inferior to running and hiding from masked soldiers with machetes.
