Your favourite writing system.

Postby Imperjeet Harmonia » Sat Mar 22, 2014 2:58 pm

For both real and fictional languages, as long as it's serious.

My favourite real writing system: Georgian
ქართულ ენას აქვს თვითმყოფადი ანბანი, რომელიც არის ნუსხურის განვითარების შედეგი, ხოლო ნუსხური კი, თავის მხრივ, მიღებულია ასომთავრულისაგან. თანამედროვე მხედრული შეიცავს 33 ასოს, რაც სრულყოფილად ასახავს თანამედროვე ქართული ენის ბგერით შედგენილობას.
Why: I like the curvy letters.

My favourite fictional writing system: Ithkuil

Oumpeá äx’ääļuktëx
Why: The above phrase means: "On the contrary, I think it may turn out that this rugged mountain range trails off at some point."

My favourite writing system: Japanese

Why? It's the language of my NS country. That and I've grown up around Japanese stuff (Anime, Nintendo, etc.) for as long as I can remember.

Real life? The Latin alphabet, due to it's simplicity and ability to be used in Nahuatl, my favorite language.

In fiction?

English has to many rules to it. Japanese is by far more simple to learn considering the fact that it's pronounced the way it's spelt and fairly straight forward. Now if only it used Rōmaji instead of Kanji/Hiragana/Katakana mix used in the Japanese writing system.

I think people are confusing language with writing system. English, French, Spanish and a lot of other languages all use the Latin Alphabet, meaning that it's written with abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz (and sometimes a few extras).

I like Georgian too, but I think my favourite would have to be the Mongolian Script. Mongolian today is typically written in Cyrillic, but I prefer the old way much more. I like how it's written top to bottom, left to right. It's uncommon to see a language written like that, because nowadays, pretty much every language I know of besides this is written horizontally.

Here's an example:
Image

Although I like Mongolian the most, I do also like Tibetan and Burmese.

The Tibetan Script looks a lot like the Bengali.

Burmese is cool too, I like the box-like things that connect the other letters.

Latin Alphabet.
Your nation is like a son. What it does right is your merit, as well as what it does wrong is your fault. When you praise it, be lucid and avoid exaggeration. Praising it too much can make it indolent. On the other hand, when you criticize it, be harsh, but do not ridicule it. Do your best to improve it, not through derision or disdain, but through good examples and dedication.

1. Hangul. Has pretty much everything one could want from an orthography, though it's a bit short on phonemes.
2. Arabic. Why? Best calligraphy of any form of writing, though it can be bit impractical compared to Hangul, Cyrillic, or Latin.
3. Cyrillic. Easy to use, looks good. All the best bits of Greek & Latin. Aesthetically pleasing. Adaptable.
4. Latin. Easy to use. Adaptable.
5. Ogham. Simple, and minimalistic.
6. Devanagari. Adaptable, aesthetically pleasing, though it's not particularly easy to use.
7. Tibetan; Georgian; Yiddish/Hebrew; Mongolian. Aesthetically pleasing.
