Venice votes 89% in favor of independence from Italy

The famous lagoon city of Venice has voted to break away from the rest of Italy.

Eighty nine per cent of Venetians backed the move to create their own sovereign state in a referendum on independence.

They want to create the "Repubblica Veneta", which would not only include the city of Venice but surrounding areas.

The northeastern Italian city consists of a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges
Venice, which attracts tens of thousands of US tourists each year, has been part of Italy for 150 years but before that was a powerful city state, naval and commercial power.

The city lost its independence after being captured by Napoleon in the late eighteenth century.

Activists pushing for the split have been inspired by similar separatist ambitions seen in Scotland.
The week-long vote, which the authorities claim is unofficial and is not legally-binding, comes at a time of economic crisis in Italy, reports the BBC.

Venice, in Italy's more prosperous north, is said to resent funds heading to what they see as waste and corruption in the country's south, said the BBC.

Finally, the Venetian Republic rises again! She shall conquer all her lost lands again! Croatia, Greece, Cyprus, they shall all become her in a matter of time! Viva San Marco! Viva la Repubblica di Venezia!

I am not sure if nature would ever allow an Italian region to economically prosper.

But hey, the authorities are likely to give this referendum the middle finger because they have too, as economically Italy is milking ever more from the prosperous north and will turn into a mini-greece without it.

Does nobody else do the obvious thing of searching general with an obvious keyword like 'venice' before posting a new thread?

Wasn't this a referendum organised by Lega Nord?

Its completely non-binding so the Italian government can ignore it and I'd like to know how many people actually bothered to vote in it, as its not a "real" referendum.

Regardless, I support self-determination and if Venice GENUINELY wants to become an independent state again then so be it.

I'm assuming the turnout reached the amazing heights of 2% and 3%.

There were "over 2 million" votes in a region of 4,865,380 people, so just under half the population.

I'll be elected Doge yet.

My assumption has been proved wrong, then.

It's rather interesting that a nonbinding, virtually meaningless referendum has attracted that much attention. They must /really/ want out.

That, or... has anyone actually ascertained the turnout?
