Ukraine Crisis II: Electric Boogaloo

I believe this to be a fantastic development. For too long has the EU been expanding it's liberalist tentacles across the European Continent. And despite their clear incompetence in handling the Eurozone crisis. Naive governments like Croatia and Serbia continue to push for EU membership (with the former having already been accepted).

The EU's attempt to woo over the FSU states like Ukraine was a blatant attempt at interference in Putin's sphere of influence. The last thing any of us should want to see is a Bureaucratic mess like the European Union weakening the power of our mightiest statesman, Vladimir Putin, or his great nation. Also Ukraine is better off without Brussels making unfair demands on it's internal affairs.

http://rt.com/op-edge/eu-ukraine-russia-deal-130/

Addition (Feb 18 2014)

The Situation has escalated. The U-turn by Yanukovych away from the EU caused protests, which have increasingly become violent. Ukraine has become steadily more polarized and riots have gripped the capital and taken lives. Some commentators have even brought up the possibility of partition or civil war.

What is your take on this?

Addition (Feb 28 2014)

Yanukovych has been overthrown, only to resurface in Russia and saying he is still the rightful president.
The country is broke, illegitimate in the eyes of Moscow. Russia is sending in troops to the secessionist pro-Russia province of Crimea. Russia has now officially sanctioned military force through it's parliament. Ukraine and Russia have both mobilized and it remains to be seen what shall come now.

Addition (March 18 2014)

Crimea has declared independence, and the rest of Ukraine is reeling with separatist violence. The Kiev government struggles to regain control and is establishing a national guard of 60,000 people. Russian forces are meanwhile massed on the border. Putin recognizes Crimea's secession and it is speculated formal annexation could begin soon. Also West has slapped Russia with sanctions.

(Disclaimer: This isn't an RP.)

How about Ukraine Crisis II: Electric Boogaloo.

Someone's (imho excellent) proposal (original in russian) for a suitable response to the Russian demands for Ukraine:

"We are ready to accept the Russian Federation's demands if they fulfill /these/ demands:
1. Putin resigns and the State Duma is dispersed, and so the next elections will be on the 25th of May, 2014.
2. The Russian Federation becomes the Russian Confederation.
3. It cancels all plans for the Customs Union, Eurasian Union and participation in BRICS
4. Pass a law giving regions and oblasts the right to secede from the Russian Confederation by democratic referendum.
5. The President of the Russian Confederation should be a pro-Ukrainian politician.
6. Stop letting the Russian Orthodox Church - Moscow Patriarchate dominate. Let the Russian Orthodox Church - Kyiv Patriarchate have a turn, and also other religions (especially Muslims)
7. Ukrainian language as second official language.
8. The official coat of arms of Russia should be a tryzub on the Russian Tricolore."

Pros: Dunmeri independence, abolition of the Empire, the Daedra, Morag Tong, House Redoran, Ashlander interests, abolitionism, Dissident Priests, canonisation of St. Jiub the Cliff Racer Slayer.
Cons: Imperials, the Empire, the False Tribunal, Dagoth Ur, House Hlaalu, Imperials, the Eight Divines, "Talos", "Nords", Imperial unionism, Imperials.

You mean that they join the EU or that they can't join the EU? Anyway in both cases there is something called the Copenhagen Criteria

I'd settle for russia looking the other way while the U.S. re-annexes Cuba. After all, we owned them near the beginning of the 20th century, then gave them their freedom.

If they can take it, they can have it. As we've learned, as long as you're a member of the U.N. security council, might makes right.

Your nation is like a son. What it does right is your merit, as well as what it does wrong is your fault. When you praise it, be lucid and avoid exaggeration. Praising it too much can make it indolent. On the other hand, when you criticize it, be harsh, but do not ridicule it. Do your best to improve it, not through derision or disdain, but through good examples and dedication.

Is this supposed to be a joke? Does anyone actually expect ANYONE in Russia to take this seriously, or even elsewhere?
I hope for the sanity of whoever wrote it (I can't open the link) that this is some sort of attempt at satire or comedy.

So I'm confused. I read today about Ukraine's military getting the okay to shoot to defend their bases, but today I hear about a naval base in Crimea getting overrun without a shot fired?

What happeend there?

Probably at the individual commander's discretion. In that example, the OC might have felt that using force to defend his base would have resulted in unacceptable casualties (e.g. mass abuse of the inevitable Ukrainian prisoners, collateral damage etc.)

Indeed, and at this point it's probably a better thing from a stability/calming action for the Ukrainians to pull out (Klitschko was/is urging a 'temporary withdrawal' from Crimea).

Of course, them pulling out is going to piss off a lot of Ukrainians (Klitschko seems like he might be in some trouble politically if they do with such a position along with his 'collaboration' with Yanukovych prior to Yanu's skeedaddling out of country). But if any Ukrainian military make some kind of last stand there's going to be heap-big pissed off nationalists and others, and as of eight hours ago the Ukes said they weren't going to withdraw.
