[ARCHIVED DEBATE] A Civilized Debate on Religion

Postby Hakio » Tue Mar 18, 2014 11:07 am

Does God exist? Also what are your opinions on religion? I believe that all sides of this debate can respect eachothers' opinions and do this in a civilized fashion. We can also talk about logical fallacies, the problem of evil, Satan, Hell and other religious topics. I am, personally, an atheist and I believe that there is no god(s) or supernatural entities of any kind. I wish for us to engage in a respectable conversation on beliefs and tradition and what value god has in our modern society.

All gods can be rendered mundane, tautologous, or impossible.
So either your god doesn't exist, or it isn't a god.
Ostro.MOV

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

It's not up to the atheists and skeptics to define god. It's the people proposing it who should define it.

The OP is a little sparse. It could do with buffing out to avoid a lock.

In fairness, a mundane god could be said to exist. It just doesn't really matter.

Sure. But at that point i'll say the defined god is so radically different to typical definitions that it's only a nominal exception to the overall stance that god doesn't exist.

Does god exist? Maybe. I think that if a god-like entity existed, one that has absolute power then they could never be explained proved/disproved by science. I know this is quite a lame/easy get out clause but if we accept that god is all knowing all powerful then it holds.

You cant talk about 'God' and 'Spirituality' within a scientific logical framework as they are so far removed from one and other.

It has no substance, no opinion from the OP, a tiny-ass OP, and is quickly becoming spam.

I think the rule of thumbs is that you should state your own opinion in the OP. So you might want to edit your post to include that.

Otherwise, it's a little short, but probably as direct as anything could be.

Absolute power is an impossibility by it's nature. You don't need science to disprove it. Just logic. The absolute power god is one of those that can be shown to be impossible, and hence not exist.

This is true only if we assume said deity is very shy, and does not want to be found. Otherwise, an omnipotent god could, by definition, grant proof of it's existence satisfactory to everyone.
