Than a way huge war over Terrorism the whole Afghan invasion was to attack the USSR but the USSR fell and Iran became a bigger issue so the US continued the invasion for a Iranian invasion and than Iraq as well for the invasion of Iran and the Oil. Stabbed in the back my ass. The international repercussions of an invasion of the north would be disastrous as would the military expenditure. Note the CCCP and Afghanistan. Politics is very much a pat of warfare. Furthermore, care to count how many Vietnamese dead were civilians. Of course they would suffer more casualties facing the most advanced military in the world. I think NATO deceives the world. Nuclear Weapons in a jungle Terrain and a small nation where Fall out could spread to China Laos Cambodia Thailand Malaysia Indonesia?
