The belief among Christians is that God doesn't interfere with the bad things happening on the planet is so that every one of us has a choice weather or not to follow him. Y'know, that old "If you love something, let it go" parable... The belief is that God shows true love by giving humans free will to do as they please and wreck the earth or follow him.

No need to be so unpleasant about it. I'm an atheist and I don't wish for the existence of any deity either, but I can understand how some people might - desire for existence after death, desire for someone who cares about their well-being in this cold and merciless universe, whatever. I also think that this question was asked with honest intentions by someone who does believe and who wants to understand more about those of us who don't, so there's no reason at all for the hostility.

Indeed, I'd say that hostility reinforces the unfortunate assumption of many religious people that we're all just angry and rebelling against their god. That assumption certainly hasn't done us any favors - especially those who reasoned our way into apostasy.
