This is contradiction. You can't want god to be real and stay atheist. Because "want god to be real" leads directly to faith.

No. I definitely don't wish to be ruled by an omnipowerful sadistic tyrant. At least we can outsmart nature and reshape the universe the way we want.

I don't find that logic convincing... I want ghosts to be real, too - but I don't believe they are.

In fact, who doesn't want some kind of world with mysteries - vampires, maybe or dragons, or aliens among us? That doesn't necessitate that you believe there ARE dragons, or vampires, or aliens among us.

That's just not true. You can want something while thinking it's not possible.

For instance, I want to win the lottery, but that doesn't mean I think I have the slightest chance of winning, so I don't enter.

I think I could handle a Discworld-like pantheon.

Obviously I'd probably not be as atheist (for long, anyway), except perhaps in the Ephebian manner (suitable caveats to be voiced at the sound of thunder and other clues), but most people that don't (for example) accidentally set up fish restaurants in unfortunately significant locations have very little to worry about from the supernatural (...just don't short-change the wizards, either, if you aren't one already and have your own problems).

And, even if worst comes to the worst, you may well still get a very nearly friendly-sounding HELLO at the end of it all/the start of the desert... I could handle that.

No I don't want God to be real.

I think people should be allowed to believe in whatever they want to, but if you believe in God then at least admit that he is very bad at his job.

No it doesnt...

I once wanted there to be a god when I was an atheist. I am still an atheist and do not want to wish for a god.

The misunderstanding may come from not fully understanding the idea of faith. Wanting something to be true does not equate at all to faith in something. I for instance WANT a far greener and more justice filled world. I do not have any faith that this will happen in the slightest. I hope it will, but faith doesnt enter the equation.

Contrary to the propaganda, we live in probably the least materialistic culture in history. If we cared about the things of the world, we would treat them quite differently. We would be concerned with their materiality. We would be interested in their beginnings and their ends, before and after they left our grasp.

No, definitely not. If such an entity existed, by definition it would be all-powerful and all-knowing. That would mean that all our lives have followed a plan, and that we are merely puppets. "Are we human, or are we dancers?"

Nice one. "God is real if you want him to be!" You just acknowledged that faith is nothing but self-delusion.

Wanting to win the lottery leads directly to believing that you already have won the lottery.

Not even remotely. For instance, I want to believe I am married to a half-dozen busty bisexual broads of loose morals. No amount of wanting it will convince me it is true, and I certainly don't have faith that it is.

Absolutely not. I don't like the idea of being watched 24/7 by something I can't see.

Do I wish an all powerful loving and benevolent entity was real? Of course, if he was really loving and benevolent.

I second that feeling.

If an omnipotent omnibenevolent deity really existed our world would be a much nicer place, as for whether the Abrahamic God (i.e. God/Yahweh/Allah) is both omnipresent and omnibenevolent... that's a separate discussion.

They're apparently the same, but the Islamic God is MUCH more similar to the Jewish one, which is in turn the Christian God but without a son.
