I live in the bible belt, so that might have something to do with it.

But it seems that people think I am gay when I get into a conversation over gay rights.
It upsets me that, at least in my area, those who defend gays are considered to be gay.

Ignorant people trying to intimidate you to be quiet by threatening social stigmatization by redefining you orientation in the eyes of the public.
Also, a question:
What can an ally do in this area to help get some progress?
I live next to a major city, Louisville.
Lots of progressive thinking here, but still quite a few homophobes and whatnot.

You can always petition your local government or write letters to your local politicians.

I live right across the river from Louisville. In Indiana, there was recently something that somewhat changed recognition of married same-sex couples and to allow (I think) civil unions. (I think)

"Every voting citizen needs to know and respect the rights and responsibilities laid out in the Constitution and its amendments if he/she is to defend those rights and execute those responsibilities with his/her vote and thereby defend the freedoms and rights that make America the great place it is. Voting isn't just a right; it's a responsibility, and we should never bestow that responsibility on a person who cannot execute it faithfully and with proven knowledge of the system in which he/she is voting." That sounds like how it works here. Its basically here: You don't care about the LGBT group if you are straight.

What gives directly the door wide open for bigoty and discrimination.

That'd be cool if someone around here played this game frequently.

Their civil unions are exactly the same as marriage without the name, hopefully they'll change the name to "marriage" in the future.

Laws allowing this things is just a begin step. Don't understand me wrong, and we should be glad with such news, but don't think like 'WHOAH NOW ALLOWED EQUAL RIGHTS WHOOHOOO NOTHING TO DO ANYMORE'

So I ask you all the next question. Do you want to living in a country where equal rights existing for everyone including the LGBT group, but however society is a bigoted one. Or do you want to living in a country where you got no equal rights as LGBT person, but in society you are widely accepted and society got no bigoty. What would be the choice?

If the society was not bigoted, I doubt that they would continue to restrict LGBT rights.

Sorry Aeken, but that's not true. Having equal rights for the LGBT group don't means like bigoty not existing.

Good news from Brazil

Our prisons now are more of safe spaces for LGBT people, and they're also magnificently more trans-friendly:

http://www1.folha.uol.com.br/cotidiano/2014/04/1442074-governo-garante-espaco-exclusivo-para-gays-e-travestis-nas-penitenciarias.shtml
Pro: Communism/anarchism, Indigenous rights, MOGAI stuff, bodily autonomy, disability rights, environmentalism
Meh: Animal rights, non-harmful religion/superstition, militant atheism, left-leaning reform of capitalism
Anti: Dyadic superstructure (sex-gender birth designation and hierarchy), positivism, conservatism, imperialism, Zionism, Orientalism, fascism, religious right, bending to reactionary concerns before freedom/common concern, fraudulent beliefs and ideologies

Formerly "Hetalian Indie Rio de Janeiro".

Compass: -10.00, -9.13
S-E Ideology: Demc. Socialist (92% ditto/Marxist, 75% Anarchist/Social democrat, 0% etc)
S-E school of thought: Communist (100% ditto, 96% Post-Keynesian)

Though this says I'm a social democrat, I'm largely a left communist.

God thanks, three good LGBT news in one day, this made me day.

I remember a time ago that I did read in the newspaper that a transgender was putted in the prison who wasn't the place for her. Putting her in a male prison....

Typical this rotten society...

Things are definitely improving, though.

In the US, >70% of people under 30 are in favor of LGBT rights.
