It's good to the point where someone would support and defend their nation and allies, but overdoing it is a bad thing. People are people whether they're from a different nation, so they deserve to be treated as equals whenever possible.

Not necessarily.

Over the above link, I think such a concept would be as legitimate as people's motives to support Israel.
Pro: Communism/anarchism, Indigenous rights, MOGAI stuff, bodily autonomy, disability rights, environmentalism
Meh: Animal rights, non-harmful religion/superstition, militant atheism, left-leaning reform of capitalism
Anti: Dyadic superstructure (sex-gender birth designation and hierarchy), positivism, conservatism, imperialism, Zionism, Orientalism, fascism, religious right, bending to reactionary concerns before freedom/common concern, fraudulent beliefs and ideologies

We don't need it in the Western world, agreed. But for countless of people in the more backward parts of Latin America and Eastern Europe, as well as in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, it would make a great difference.

A gay nation would be very nice.
I have recommended this idea once before.

Rio de Janeiro is arguably underdeveloped world's San Francisco. And we need far more infrastructure, organization, observing, international pressure and money. It would be reaaaaally helpful here. California has already enough development on its own's merit. :V

Queer people are 12% of a given population in post-industrial societal gender settings, so I imagine somewhere between 700 and 800 million.

Around 1 billion people live in countries with marriage equality nowadays.

Australia and Eastern South America are the wisest options (close to strongly heterosexist populous areas, such as West Africa, the Caribbean and parts of Asia), China is too dense for political pressure be any relevant at causing separatist movements and not democratic at all to start with, enough said.

We'll need another century to eradicate shari'a laws that are used to condemn us to death.

Be equal to other people on the whole globe?! hah

Sadly but likely we need to wait a long time before equal rights would be on the whole world. Especially in the more conservative/religious parts of this world it don't would be easy.

However, laws makes no big different for an equal, friendly society. Society self is the key towards acceptation. If it is in law not allowed to kill someone because his/her sexuality isn't 'normal', but society does kill almost daily someone because of that, then the law don't would be taken serious.

Society is the key.

I guess the highest homeless LGBT youths are in the unfriendly-LGBT states?

Considering this pope seems to have a shred of humanity, and the church generally claims to be compassionate toward people it disapproves of... it's worth a shot. I mean, nobody forces the pope to take a hard line on homosexuality. Who's going to excommunicate him for it?
Worst thing that could happen is that the pope doubles down on homophobia and proves that nope, the whole "compassion" thing was a sham and the church is still the same old.

So why is it that when I defend LGBTs and LGBT rights, people think I'm gay?
I live in the bible belt, so that might have something to do with it.

But it seems that people think I am gay when I get into a conversation over gay rights.
It upsets me that, at least in my area, those who defend gays are considered to be gay.

Also, a question:
What can an ally do in this area to help get some progress?
I live next to a major city, Louisville.
Lots of progressive thinking here, but still quite a few homophobes and whatnot.
I'm a cis-het male. Ask me about my privilege.
