As an English speaker, it most certainly does need to make sense to me.
It also needs to make sense to every English speaker, else it won't be taken seriously and it will only hurt your cause.
I will not use ou. It's archaic and that's not how the word was used.
I will use they or another non-archaic word that fits the mold.
Unless there is some meeting including the Oxford elite and English scholars where they create or decide on new genderless pronouns, I will use they.
Because "they" is grammatically correct and "ou" is not. Ou is not in the dictionary and is not a word in modern English.
You're coming off like a special snowflake or tumblrina.
You don't get to change a fundamental part of English simply because it doesn't meet your standards.
"They" completely fits the mold and there is nothing about it that doesn't validate those who don't identify as male or female.
Full stop.
What's a special snowflake?

Oh, he's too much of special snowflake to get a day job -- his mom's paying the rent while he hangs out waiting for the perfect high-paying project to come along. I guess the market for C-minus filmmaking majors is a little soft right now or something.

Although biology usually determines genetically whether a human's biological sex is male or female (though intersex people are also born), the state of personally identifying as, or being identified by society as, belonging to neither the male or female genders is considered relative to the individual's gender role in society, gender identity, and sexual orientation. While some western scholars have sought to understand the term 'third gender' in terms of 'sexual orientation,' several other scholars, especially the native non-western scholars, consider this as a misrepresentation of 'third genders.

There aren't two and there aren't three because there isn't one to begin with. Gender is purely a social concept with no bearing on reality.
