"Put that down, Mr. Eric." He said. "She's obviously not a chicken."

We can all be whatever we feel like thanks to the magic of Disney.
Now to be honest, I feel as though FB went overboard here. They caved to social conformity and while I get that they are a massive social-networking site, was there really a need to do this? There was male, Female, or Other. I only see people in First World Countries only getting butt-hurt over this whole "gender" issue and it doesn't need to be. We get it, you aren't in the *norm*, then select other and get over it. You wish to be identified by a non-gender associated pronoun, fine, select Other, you wish to identify with female pronouns, then select "female", and if you wish to identify as male, select the "male" option.
In other words, there was no reason for them to do this, they just want kudos for appearing to care about non-conformative minorities and their supporters.

You know, if your own gender identification wasn't available on any official forms, or if it were but you weren't legally allowed to select it, I bet you'd be singing a totally different tune.

I don't doubt that at all.
Two boxes a person can place themselves into? Or is it a box others place them into?

If you got a penis, you're a male
If you have a lovely vagina, you're a female.
that's it
Yes. Now that we've established that you understand what sex is, lets move on to gender, which is the actual topic of discussion.
If you identify as a man, you're a man.
If you identify as a woman, you're a woman.
If you identify as an androgyne, you're an androgyne.
Etc.

1. Neither of those dogtoasters are actual gender identities. You might as well be arguing that a pizza is a shark.
2. Also, yes, there was a need for this, because before, there were only gender options for people who fit into the gender binary.
3. The denial of the existence non-binary genders is the primary means by which those of us outside the binary are denied equal rights. That's why we're "butthurt" about this. Also, I fail to see what "first world countries" has to do with anything.
4. We weren't able to do that before. Also, we kind of *DO* need more than just "other".
5. Welcome to capitalism.

Properly impose numbers into my text, for the format in which you used was incorrect and lazy. 1. Also state the rights that you don't have because you aren't, ahem, "binary", and 2. also wasn't the custom option there before? In addition, I don't believe in dogtoasters, please use catovens or another similar object (frogblenders and lizarddisposals are considered to be in that realm of accepted options) if you want me to respond to you. 3. Also, the government forms aren't about your mindset or personal beliefs, they're about your body parts, if you got da jiggly parts of a woman and were labeled a woman or female at birth, then the government considers you to be female. It does not care about what your selected pronoun is (just like how when it watches you, it isn't actually watching or collecting information for personal use, but that's a tangent for another thread), just that you pay your taxes. 4. Explain why you need more than other if you aren't binary? I see it as a simple "yes" or "no" answer, if "no" GREAT. Push the "other" option. If "yes" GREAT. Push your desired "sex/gender". It's not that difficult.

So briefly, Facebook now allows 56 different gender identities rather than simply "man" and "woman" - and kindly asks for clarification regarding pronouns when you choose. In my opinion, considering the role Facebook now has in pop cultural consensus, this is excellent news and a great step forward.
Your own thoughts, my friends?
