Of course there's a point to it. Facebook are trying to keep their users happy, and thus keep them using Facebook, and keep advertising to them, and keep making money off them.

Transsexual is not a gender.

And one possible gender is androgyny. Then there's gender fluidity, and the lack of a gender. Most of the 56 options are synonyms for some of the same sorts of things, so there's not actually 56 different genders, just multiple ways of saying some of the same things. Which is a good thing, for the people who don't understand one label, but do understand another.

1. This is a gender issue, not a sexual orientation issue. Being gay has nothing to do with this.

Transsexual is not a gender.

It can be just as much as female and male are, both of which are based on a physical appearance.

It's like everything else on Facebook; the "options" are more like "suggestions." There are 56 specific tags you can put in the field, but you can also just write whatever you want as it also serves as a regular text box.
