Couldn't they just have "Man" "Woman" and "Insert Here" with a word box? That would lower the options, and make things simpler.

If one had "insert here" with a word box (I assume where a person can type in whatever they wish) wouldn't that increase the options, as people would be able to write whatever they want? So you'd be going from 56 to millions or more options (Gender - Quantum Hedgehog)

But anyway, why is it less simple for having 50+ options? Each of the categories is a defined, known thing. People who identify as them know which applies to them, and wont have a problem picking them out of a list. Facebook isn't asking you and everyone else to trawl a list you don't understand, to find a word you've never heard of to apply to yourself (heck, you don't even need to set gender on facebook, like you don't need to supply any other personal detail to your profile).

You identify as a male or female? There they are. You identify as an Adrogyne or gender fluid? There they are. It's not like you're going to select male and then get confused - "but wait, maybe I'm neutrois, or a trans women, or two spirited... this list has confused me, why can't I just have male, female and other?"

Singular they ftw!

I'd like a word for that so there would only be neutral gender pronouns for everyone.

Until someone comes up with a singular gender neutral word to replace "he" or "she" that isn't "they", I have no choice but to support the extension of genders.

People have come up with such words, they just haven't taken root in the popular consciousness yet (and perhaps the current gen of them wont, but it's a start). They/them doesn't seem so bad though.

While there's probably many people that can't tell the difference unless the colors are lined up, for the few that can (or just prefer the name ghost white because they think it sounds cool), it's nice that the choice is there.
