One day Facebook will have a continuous linear mapping from the uncountable set of genders to an n-dimensional vector of gender identity. What a time to be a mathematics student!

And also cis/trans* status has been tagged onto gender rather than being put as a separate field (which is problematic because whether you're cis or trans* doesn't actually effect your gender or the way in which you are that gender, it's a socially constructed relationship between your gender and your assigned sex). And you still have to pick your gender from a list ANYWAY, it's just a bigger list (which is problematic because gender being defined by the individual, it's impossible to have an exhaustive list of all possible genders)

You chose to treat my comment as an "attack".

See my earlier poboy/sub sandwich comparison for why the duplication isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Gren, I totally agree with your argument, but for them to offer the choice of "trans" & "trans*", "cis" & "cisgender", and "(insert prefix here) man/woman" & "(insert prefix here) male/female" is a bit too much. At that point, it's basically like arguing over British spelling vs. American spelling.

True, but then they even have options for British or American English.Saiwania wrote:Including a third gender identity is okay, but 56 different ones? That is just silly.
Its actually less than 56. There's just multiple labels for some of the same things so that people who don't know what one label is will be more likely to be able to know what another label is.
Again, poboy/sub sandwich.

I believe that poboys tend to be chicken or shrimp sandwiches, while subs can be anything.

Shit, I gotta go on Facebook just to see what all of them are.
But seriously, fifty-six? Did they buy Tumblr from Yahoo or something?

Look the way I see it...There are Male's and Female's. Identify as whichever you want. I don't care but the genders are Male and Female.
I don't think you understand the difference between gender and sex.
