If they're going to offer needlessly redundant choices, they could at least offer "guy", "dude", "chap", "fellow", and "bloke" as alternatives for "man".

Okay, this is good, but this is kind of going over the top.

"Gender-questioning"? Why couldn't they just give you the option to change your gender?

So briefly, Facebook now allows 56 different gender identities rather than simply "man" and "woman" - and kindly asks for clarification regarding pronouns when you choose. In my opinion, considering the role Facebook now has in pop cultural consensus, this is excellent news and a great step forward.

Your own thoughts, my friends?

I like this. Its a good step forward. They still need to make alterations to the 'relationships' and 'interested in' options, but this is still a good thing.

On Gender, below female and male there should be custom, which allows you to enter an option on this list. Worked splendidly for me.

IIRC, you have to be using the US English language option.

That's not what I meant by Un-needed. They have several Things you can choose that mean THE EXACT SAME THING.

What's the point of that. You don't need 5 Gender Options that mean the same thing......

Some people don't know what some labels mean, but do understand others.

For instance, a poboy in New Orleans is what many people outside New Orleans would call a sub sandwich, or a hero, or something like that. Does it not help people to give multiple labels for the same thing in case they don't understand the one label you'd have given otherwise?

The Glorious Eternal Revolution Land wrote:There are two genders, not 56, at least for humans. Biological fact.

Gender is a matter of psychology, not biology. And there's more than two.

Scientific fact.

What's there to dismiss?

Also, I find it ironic and an act of appropriation that conservatives have hijacked "family values" in order to hind behind bigotry, when nearly every major family value in American culture would express support for people regardless of sexual orientation and/or gender identity.

Had a squizz at ye olde' HuffPost user comments, apparently the new additions are not good enough.

Better but still kinda cissexist & binarist, insofar as it still has male and female as "default" genders and anything else is a deviation from that. And also cis/trans* status has been tagged onto gender rather than being put as a separate field (which is problematic because whether you're cis or trans* doesn't actually effect your gender or the way in which you are that gender, it's a socially constructed relationship between your gender and your assigned sex). And you still have to pick your gender from a list ANYWAY, it's just a bigger list (which is problematic because gender being defined by the individual, it's impossible to have an exhaustive list of all possible genders)

I don't....My Issue is Placing stuff that only like 100 People are going to click...AND THEN Putting FIVE different options for that.

Edit: Plus as a Mormon we believe that God created Men and Women...not All this other stuff. I'll let Two-Spirit Slide though as it is religious/cultural and I can't argue with another groups religious/Cultural beliefs

So? You didn't have to do anything to create it, and you don't have to go through the entire list to figure out what to identify as.

Even if God created men/women, there's no reason to deny people who identify as a different gender, because they exist.

Also, gender is socially constructed, so God doesn't enter into it.

Also, yeah, people complain. About anything and everything, such as you complaining about people complaining. Pot, meet kettle. And since you live in a glass house, try not to throw stones.

Which, again, isn't necessarily a bad thing, since it makes somebody more likely to understand at least one label for a given gender (or lack thereof). Again, I draw reference to the poboy/sub sandwich comparison I made earlier.
