Baby Name Laws - should there be any?

Postby Cetacea » Fri Feb 07, 2014 4:13 pm

Baby name issues have come up again with NZ's Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages releasing a list of 71 banned baby names, with much emphasis being put on the parents who wered disallowed from naming their child Anal.

NZ law states acceptable names must not cause offense to a reasonable person, not be unreasonably long and should not resemble an official title and rank. Nonetheless some names like "Violence" and "Number 16 Bus Shelter" do slip through.

A few years back there was even an incident when Welfare services were called in and a child placed under court guardianship to force the change of her name Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii

Anyway I think some parents are stoopid and should be kept from using plainly offensive names like Anal, but is Rogue really that bad?
and is it censorship or at least nannystate interfering with the decisions of private citizens?

I don't think it would be prudent for you to name your kid "Hitler" or "Rainbow Dash". But I agree with Frisivisa, we should protect kids with as little regulation as possible.

Your nation is like a son. What it does right is your merit, as well as what it does wrong is your fault. When you praise it, be lucid and avoid exaggeration. Praising it too much can make it indolent. On the other hand, when you criticize it, be harsh, but do not ridicule it. Do your best to improve it, not through derision or disdain, but through good examples and dedication.

Banning names like "Duke" and "Baron" seems to be going a bit overboard, seeing as those aren't particularly odd, and no one's actually going to think you're a duke because your name is Duke.

"Majesty" especially, seeing as its an abstract concept. "Your Majesty/Her Majesty" I can understand, but just banning the name "Majesty"?

I remember a thread years ago where some really weird parents had named their sons things like "Adolf Hitler" and "Heinrich Himmler SS".

I wonder what it's like going to school and when you learn about the holocaust, everyone just stares at you.

True, but it does allow parents with certain surnames to come up with combinations like "Duke Of Windsor" and "Baron Munchausen." Okay, maybe not the second one, but you get the idea. The idea of officially banned names strikes me as excessive, though I see the point. Kids will have plenty of reasons to scream, "YOU RUINED MY LIFE!!! I WISH I HAD NEVER BEEN BORN!!!" and slam their bedroom doors without throwing silly names into the mix.

Simply, I don't think it's fully necessary after much thinking since the previous time such a thread appeared. However, someone has to disagree with my observations as the laws exist.

Don't name your baby anything that begins with "Sha", ends with "iqua", sounds like a car (or alcoholic beverage), contains numbers, and absolutely NO asinine spellings.

"Here's my daughter. I name her Yuneek because she's special."

I would add no naming children after swear words, but I rather like the idea of naming a child "Fuck". C'mere little Fuck. This is my boy, Fuck Jr. the Third.

Chances are that with parents like that, you wouldn't be in school long enough to get to that stage.

I think each new name, unless common and/or traditional and/or the most acceptable and etymologically correct bastardization of a common foreign name should have a team of psychologists and sociologists to allow it or not, depending on region and socioeconomic class (with richer or more privileged people from regions of greater status having more choice). I had it already with poor people-sounding names.

Really? NZ bans people from using "the Second" or "the Third" in a name? What the fuck, man? Are they really that staunchly anti-nobility as to ban people from stating that person's place in their family tree? That is the most bullshit bullshit I've ever seen.

I really don't give a shit what kids are named, so long as it ain't something incredibly fucking stupid. The kid can just change their name later, anyway.
