Weird.

Actually the Sumerians did record a great flood, though it "happened" way before the date he bible gives.

It's thought that sumerian religion influenced the old testament, Judaism is a very old religion so it's no suprise.

Why don't we just combine all of the scientific and religious theories?

Within every guess, there is a grain of truth, and if we combine them all, we'll be close to answer.

Chuck Norris round-house-kicked a rock, and that caused the big bang. Liam Nieson stared determinedly into the distance, and that caused the resulting particles to begin to form into matter. Morgan Freeman smiled, and that caused life to begin to form. Then they got in their time-machine and went home. The end.

But that's exactly what the steady state theory states

Or roughly anyway, unless they mean some random other theory with the same effect, though they can all be considered "steady state" theories

Both creation myths and the Big Bang also state the universe had a beginning. That obviously does not entail that they are the same thing, or that committing yourself to one is the same thing as committing yourself to the other.

What Potentiation is saying is true; the Big Bang theory states that the universe has always existed as well--in some form or another, at least. That said, that's not the same thing as the Steady State theory. The Steady State theory shouldn't even be considered at this point; we know for a fact that celestial bodies are drifting away from each other.

Oops, my bad, the steady state theory specifically insinuates that matter is created in the voids left by receding galaxies, I was considering it as a general term for static universe theories

And then I possess Alduin and literally everything explodes (because Nyarlathotep+Alduin vs. Morgan Freeman is too awesome for the universe to sustain), becoming the Big Bang. Obviously. I mean, if you're not going to have malevolent chaos gods possessing world-consuming dragons, what's your creation myth worth anyway?

How did the Universe come to be?

No one knows, but the Big Bang was likely to have played some role in the Universe's expansion.

That was easy.
