By that logic, the optimal solution would be to get everyone as educated as possible. This can be done, albeit difficulty, but given that state of education (at least public) in the US, I wouldn't hold my breath.

How dare you. I am as British as my next door neighbour. I hold citizenship, my Father has held citizenship, my Granddfather has held citizenship. My Granddad served in the Royal Navy and earned the right for my family and all descendants of it to call themselves British.

400 years ago British settlers in America called themselves 'American'. But what right did they have to it? What about the Natives there? The settlers called themselves American because they saw themselves as a part of the American nation (or a new American nation anyway, I'm not going to go on about how the said nation was forged through brutal, constant warfare with the Natives). When Italian Americans and Jews arrived during the various waves of 20th century immigration, perhaps not at first, but eventually through assimilation they call themselves American. To this day, I'm sure most Italian Americans, or descendants considering the amount of interbreeding, would consider themselves American.

The fact that I would raise arms and fight for my country is enough for me to consider myself British. Hell, not even that. The fact that I hold a British passport is enough for me to be British. No one is more British in the UK, whether you're Black, of Asian descent, with Irish ancestry or if you're half Maltese/Latino like me. Besides, Malta was a British colony from the 1800s.
