I love the ideas this country was based on and I think we had a good system. When the OP says that European countries care about their populace he/she is hinting that America doesn't. I would like to take this opportunity to tell him/her that if America didn't care about the populace we wouldn't still be free. I know many, many people say that no president would ever remove the Constitution, but if our government really stopped caring about the populace, who is to say that wouldn't happen if it would guarantee them personal gain.
Back to my point though I am proud of being American because America took down the best military power of history, Great Britain. A bunch of dedicated soldiers fought for what they felt was right and won. And think about how many revolutions have happened in history since then. How many people have fought (whether they won or lost) to be free. To have the same privileges as Americans do. That's why I'm proud of my country and I would gladly give my life protecting it. I know a lot of people will disagree with me and that's fine this is all about opinion. I think America is a great nation, no matter how stupid the people running it currently are. Because people can get better and things can change, that's what life is all about.

Being born here in America doesn’t make you an American. Why, if birth made you American, you wouldn’t need any legislation, you wouldn’t need any amendments to the Constitution, you wouldn’t be faced with civil-rights filibustering in Washington, D.C., right now." - Malcolm X
"I have more respect for a man who lets me know where he stands, even if he’s wrong, than the one who comes up like an angel and is nothing but a devil." - Malcolm X
"There is no greater fallacy than the belief that aims and purposes are one thing, while methods and tactics are another, This conception is a potent menace to social regeneration. All human experience teaches that methods and means cannot be separated from the ultimate aim. The means employed become, through individual habit and social practice, part and parcel of the final purpose; they influence it, modify it, and presently the aims and means become identical." - Emma Goldman
"I say to you that our goal is freedom, and I believe we are going to get there because however much she strays away from it, the goal of America is freedom. Abused and scorned though we may be as a people, our destiny is tied up in the destiny of America." - Martin Luther King, Jr.
"I could never understand ethnic or national pride. Because to me, pride should be reserved for something you achieve or attain on your own, not something that happens by accident of birth. Being Irish isn’t a skill, it’s a fucking genetic accident. You wouldn’t say ‘I’m proud to be 5’11”. I’m proud to have a predisposition for colon cancer.’ So why the fuck would you be proud to be Irish, or proud to be Italian, or American or anything?" - George Carlin
"It’s the old American Double Standard, ya know: Say one thing, do somethin’ different. And of course this country is founded on the double standard, that’s our history! We were founded on a very basic double standard: This country was founded by slave owners who wanted to be free." - George Carlin
"Nationalism does nothing but teach you how to hate people you’ve never met– all of a sudden you take pride in accomplishments you had no part in whatsoever… if you’re American you’ll go “Fuck the French! Fuck the French, if we hadn’t have saved their ass in two World Wars, they’d be speakin’ German right now!” And you go, “Oh, was that us?” Was that me and you, Tommy, we saved the French? Jesus! I know I blacked out a little after that fourth shot of Jägermeister last night, but I don’t remember… I know we were going through the Wendy’s drive-thru to get one of them “Freshetta” sandwiches that looked so alluring on the commercial, but then we ordered it and realized we had no money, and we had to ditch out before the second window, and those douchebags in line behind us with the bass music probably got our order and we laughed about that. But I don’t remember savin’ the French. At all! I went through the last ten calls on my cell phone and there’s nothin’–incoming or outgoing–to the French, lookin’ for muscle on a project! I checked my pants, there’s no mud stains on the knees from when we were garroting Krauts in the trenches at Verdun. I think “we” didn’t do anything but watch sports bloopers while we got hammered. I think “we” should shut the fuck up!" - Doug Stanhope

Naturally, and that therein the problem exists. The history of peaceful government isn't just a fairy tale, but the most intentional of lies by the victors of the world.

Well, in California, East Asians and Indians are the only people keeping Hispanics from being the majority, and currently keeping white people at the generous plurality.
And soon is before 2050.

You are judging the climate of the entire nation based on a fraction of it? Please say you are joking.....If not then...

Like when we have to stand for the freaking anthem every goddamn morning in school, that's ridiculous.

Am I proud of a country who spies on its own citizens so unashamedly, while those citizens are fooled in to believing their rights being curbed is totally okay and for the best?
No. I'm not, and I'm not a patriot.
Not to say other countries are utopias, but goddamn, this one's awful.
