Chocolate milk wars

Postby Pope Joan » Wed Dec 09, 2009 4:02 pm

Where do you stand on this battlefield?

On the one hand, it may be better to drink sweet chocolatey milk than high fructose substitutes which are easily available; after all, it is still low fat, and dairy.

On the other, choco milk has virtually as much sugar as soda pop, and do kids really need that much sugar?

So, where do you stand?

"Some school lunchrooms have turned into virtual battlefields in recent years as activists push for more healthful menus. Remember the soda wars and ketchup as a vegetable?

The latest fight is over chocolate milk. Critics say it has too much sugar, and they have persuaded schools across the country to get rid of it.

In response, the dairy industry has launched the "Raise Your Hand for Chocolate Milk" campaign. There's a Facebook page and an online petition to keep chocolate milk in school lunchrooms.

"We know that when flavored milk is taken out of the school, kids' milk consumption goes down," says Ann Marie Krautheim, senior vice president of nutrition affairs for the National Dairy Council. "

Say, I used to know how to enable polls on this forum...? Damn this geriatric memory loss.

It may have the same amount of sugar but it has so much other stuff that it is vastly better. Strawberry milk>chocolate milk anyways

I thought I read that chocolate milk only had like 60 calories more than regular milk?

Wow, kids today are really spoilt. 20-30 years ago we didn't have cokes or chocolate milk in the cafeteria. Didn't need it then, don't need it now.

Indeed.http://www.nutrientfacts.com/searchfood ... ular&var=5
http://www.nutrientfacts.com/searchfood ... t&x=17&y=5

That 60 calories adds up. And it's primarily in added HFCS, which is problematic in and of itself. (I'd be surprised if the corn lobby isn't helping the dairy lobby w/this behind the scenes.)

Well in Schools in the U.K they banned everything unhealthy including chocolate milk.
So people drink water and juice instead. :(

When I was a boy, we got cardboard and tap water. If you were in High school, then you were allowed to draw pictures of food on your cardboard with a non-toxic pen.

Wow you were lucky.
My dad had to share the cardboard with the rest of his class mates.

I don't.

In seriousness, I'm with you on this. There's enough corn syrup in their diet as it stands.

Yes... and they need to stop doing that. If they must use sweetener, use cane sugar.

yeah, why couldn't they just flavor it without adding sugar?

At any rate, I always drank the chocolate milk, and I think if its a choice between getting more kids to drink milk, or that they might not at all, I'd say keep it around.

You'd think the sugar already in the milk would be enough. But like I said, if a sweetener must be used, cane sugar would be a better, more natural alternative to the chemically-altered high fructose corn syrup.

I really can't buy chocolate milk, it doesn't last long enough. I drink it too quickly 'cause it's so tasty.

When they just put 'sugar' on the ingredients what type of sugar are they using.
