I wouldn't consider Virginia to be part of the separatist south anymore. They barely were in 1861, and even then only after the initial military actions (Ft. Sumter and the precautionary Union occupation of Maryland) kind of scared them. Their culture is more central eastern seaboard than deep south and certainly more than the southwest or central plains. In other words, it's closer toMaryland and Delaware in character than Texas and Oklahoma.

Also noone has mentioned the state of Delmarva, but I guess remapping of states within the US hasn't really come up.

Ya, probably, they moreso joined out of fear of Federal authority than sympathy with the rest of the South. But then again... it's a little bit of an unlikely situation for the South to be leaving any time soon, to begin with.

I'm fairly sure this will satisfy everyone.

Clearly no. Rio de Janeiro's metropolitan area, as well as all of the wider Rio de Janeiro dialect-speaking area including Espírito Santo, eastern Minas Gerais and northern coastal São Paulo up from Santos' metropolitan area, is united with the ass-poor your-tax-is-my-ailment people and not with the Uruguayans and Argentines and southern Brazilians. Make me European, Japanese, River Platean, independent or at least keep things as they are, otherwise, just no. :P

Can you change it and have Vietnam taking over Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Bhutan, and Bangladesh; china taking over Mongolia; Russia reclaiming Kazahkstan; Indonesia taking over Philippines. It's as realistic as this map.

Curitiba is the best capital city, but their folks are even more hated than Rio's, and that says a lot (we are the ones responsible for the stereotypes the other Brazilians hate). :P

Seriously, its only the Argentinian political classes and a few Peronists actually give a crap. Most Argentinians don't want to force them to join Argentina and respect their choice. They're just made to look like zealot militarists by their crazy witch queen Kirchner and her dead bug eyed husband before her. I seriously think Spain or Mexico Uruguay have a greater claim and that's saying something about anyone but Britain's claim's credibility.

Make two identical copies of the original territory, give one to each and destroy the original (so nobody gets to argue about who got "the genuine Holy Land"). You'd have to stack them vertically, one above the other, of course. Perhaps alternate which is on top every third Tuesday of the month?

No, I mean since it looks like a map, and not a map with stretched out continents or a cut up globe. In all honesty Robinson Projection is best, but I choose Mercator simply because it angers people who complain about Africa being tiny, as though Africa is important.

I've always favoured gnomonic projection based upon an utterly arbitrary point of map/sphere contact.

(It also works in higher dimensions, for pretty results.)
