UK general election poll

Well, I think it's been sometime since we last did a poll on who people would vote for in a UK general election. If I'm wrong, please do slap me around and we can close this thread up for being too repetitive, but otherwise it'd be good to find out where people's feelings are right now. Not so long ago, the Conservatives were having a hard time making much of an improvement in the confidence people felt about their performance in office; not to say anything about the dire straits the Liberal Democrats had got themselves into.

However, with the economy on the mend, people are wondering whether David Cameron, the Prime Minister, can start turning it around and get his party back up on top. The lead the Labour Party has maintained in the polls have definitely narrowed over the past few months. And all the while UKIP, though having dipped in the polls since their high around the last local elections, are looking forward to a rebound come the European elections.

So, if you were faced with a ballot paper right now, who would you vote for? In the list for the poll I've included the usual contenders, though I've left out the Northern Ireland parties as the list would rather get a little too long - a poll specially devoted to Northern Ireland might be a way to go, as the politics tend to be very different there anyway. If your party isn't on the list, feel free to post it.

And even if you aren't British, feel free to post and vote. Not like I can stop you anyway, and it'd be interesting to have an idea of how the NSG community in general feels about British politics.

P.S. I have created a poll just on Northern Ireland: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=280161

I'm not British, but it would be between Labour or the Lib Dems.

SNP or Labour. As of right now it doesn't look like Scotland will be independent unless all the undecided voters vote Yes so I'd put the SNP first to push for further devolution, then Labour as Milliband is a bit better than that idiot Blair and I trust them far more than I trust the Conservative/Lib Dems in power

I'm torn between UKIP and the Conservatives, but would probably go with the Conservatives.

Also you forgot the two main Northern Irish parties in the poll.

Oh, should have said, I'm voting Labour.

Please read the OP, where I explain why I left them out. If I included Sinn Fein and the DUP, I really would have to include the SDLP, UUP, Alliance e.t.c, and it'd get a rather long list then.

But the welsh and Scots are the same that's why I say it.

The Blatant Bias is Blatant. You can't have a poll about a general election and not include parties that are regular seat holders in the parliament. In fact the northern Irish parties hold more seats than either the SNP or PC. So they are in fact more important to Westminster and a general election than quite a number of parties on the list.

Libdem. May have fucked up quite a bit since 2010, but they're still a damn sight better than any other party with a good shot at power (I'd argue the fuckups mostly stem from the Conservatives knowing how to play the Political Game better than them).

But why the General Election? We have the European Parliamentary Elections in 3 months! For that, the Conservatives. I like our current arrangement with the European Union; I don't want to integrate further, especially with its current structural issues, but I damn sure don't want to turn tail and run when we have such a good deal with the block, and if we run we'll almost certainly not get a better offer to return (given we helped construct the damn concept it makes sense we have such a good arrangement as-is).

I'm not British, but if I could vote, I'd vote for either Respect, the Socialist Party of England and Wales, or (if they ran elections), I'd definitely vote for the Socialist Party of Great Britain.

Respect? Seriously?

They're only good for comic relief, and Galloway is a nutcase.

your options are the tories or lib dems. as much as galloway likes to pretend to be a cat on national TV your wiggle room is slight at best.

The SNP and Plaid Cymru have rather nearly a monopoly on the Other party status in Scotland and Wales respectively. It is therefore practical to include them on the list. On the other hand, five parties hold seats in Northern Ireland, which would take the poll over the limit of entries I can include. I don't mean to be biased against Northern Ireland politics, but it would be simply impractical to include them, but to not include the SNP and Plaid Cymru because of that would be rather extreme in my view. The best way forward is for a special poll just for Northern Ireland, especially considering the politics there tend to be very different there anyway. At least in Scotland and Wales, the main national parties compete there directly, which is not the case in Northern Ireland.

the list of small parties.

DUP (8)
SNP (6)
SF (5, in abstention)
Plaid (3)
SDLP (3)
Greens (1)
Respect (1)
Alliance (1)
Independent (4)

You see how irreverent Plaid are for example yet the democratic ulster party is the fourth biggest in parliament. Your poll should have as many as possible that can fit in order from largest down. Yet in front of them you have a host of 1 and no seat parties in your poll. That makes the poll rather not a refection of the poll choices on offer in a year and a half's time. But rather who you see as important. Such a poll should be objective an contain the most important parties, clearly the democratic Ulster Party and SF are important to voters in areas of the UK.

I have a feeling we're not going to see eye-to-eye on this. Again, I'm not being biased or deciding who's important and who's not - I'm just saying I can only fit in 10 entries on that poll and I've got to be practical. I suggest that your keep your ideas in mind if ever you want to do your own general election poll in future. Thanks.

P.S. Oh, and I don't have a host of 1 and no seat parties. All on that list have a number of seats, save the Greens who do have just 1, and UKIP who have none, but I doubt anyone could argue UKIP shouldn't be on that poll.

I would vote them, except last time I checked they were against nuclear power, which is rather ironic seing it is the only real hope* of going green until fusion pans out.
