Agreed. As it is they're already weary of war. I doubt they'd be excited about sending more men to die for a developing 3rd world country on the other side of the world.

It's merely more of a symbolic political victory for Obama that he is able to show powers challenging the United states in Asia pacific that his power can still reach in this region. He is not really going to use them to defend us full time when we need them anyway. The pact was signed but Obama would not be willing to deal with a threat on the other side of the world, just to show off that US power can be brought everywhere.

And won't gain anything. Plus they'll have to do more in case of war. In case of Japan, whenever war breaks out, the US can just assist them, not really doing much work.

They'll be doing the brunt of the work in this hypothetical situation. Between the Philippines as an ally and the PRC as a trade partner, I'd hesitate much less to drop the former after weighing all the pros and cons. The US's strength lies in the fact that it has ties to multiple countries in Asia, notably Japan and SoKor. That's a big deterrent to a country with as big an export sector as the PRC's.

Agree. In other words, even with the US base in Philippines, we're still screwed.

Which should prompt the Philippine government to rethink all the posturing against the Chinese. Better learn to make friends with others in the region before its boxes itself in.

Well China has basically shun all the protest we do. I think we should start beefing up the military than keep talking to them, since they're basically blind against what they're doing.

Political pride. If China would surrender to us the Kalayaan islands, they would appear weak to the whole world and they are not letting all their prestige just disappear because of a stunt like this with the Philippines.

So we fight fire indeed, with fire. Pride vs. Pride.

That's the only real recourse we have. Or continue to invest in growth as Pnoy's been doing (wealth "trickling down" is another matter) to make us look like a better deal; at least enough to make us matter and not be just the backwater pile of rocks in the South China/West Philippine sea.

We are a major part of their country, even if Americans don't send troops (quite frankly there are already troops there to begin with) there are still over 10 million Filipinos that will probably go home to defend their families... I know I would.

Nope, we fight hermits with allies, make China feel helpless after all, China needs us more than we need them...

You just made me feel extremely happy, i thought that all other people who post about boycotting China products were just saying nonsensical things. Well, we are the 11th most populous country in the world and we do buy a lot of made in China products from the banketas. If this is so.

BOYCOTT CHINA PRODUCTS!

Since we trade with the United states more than we are willing to trade with someone we absolutely hate.

EDIT: This is one revelation we all should realize and use when the time is right.

Gentlemen, we already knew this, if worst comes to worst we can always evaporate the $7 billion trade that we have with them that should put at least 10 million of their workforce out of work as opposed to very minimal economic consequences on our behalf, remember the World views us in the right because it was us who brought this to the international community and it is us who isn't sending aircraft carriers to the region, and the fact that we're less corrupt and a democracy is also helping our case. Let the Chinese people deal with their Government the same way that Argentina dealt with its Junta after the Falklands incident...

I perceive that the temperature there should reach around 35-36 degrees back there (celsius)

Not counting other Filipinos abroad.

Nevertheless, yes we are a major part of their country, but it is simply not in their interest to get involved. I guess with Japan they would. So the only real choice we have in order to preserve Philippine sovereignty is to beef up the military and strengthen alliances with other ASEAN nations like Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia.

IIRC, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the Vietnamese also laying claim to islands we and the PRC are having a row over?

How so is it not in their best interest? We are located in the most strategical place on Earth, the sea that we are claiming accounts for nearly half of Global sea trade, not to mention that if it went to the Philippines, the possible oil that we would gain could help ease fears in Europe and the states over this whole Russian mess and deny the Chinese Government from capitalising in its Communist capitalism stance...

No that's the Paracel islands, they don't claim anything that we're claiming, that's why we're working pretty well together.
