We have a mutual defence treaty which was signed in 1951 under the so called "Manila Treaty" which also obliges apparently Australia and New Zealand to come to our aid, so we're good.

I think its a great alliance. I don't like the way other people think about US though, the "We need them for now, kick them later" mentality. I think it's not appropriate to treat an ally like that.

It's dissolved because of lack of diplomatic interest by the other members in the pact. It's formally out of the question. We do have a de facto alliance with Australia nevertheless, the participate in a lot of defense contracts with us as well as they participate in some occasions in the wars we fight in our homeland.

Take a look at Noynoy, i am beginning to question his leadership big time, he privatized a lot of companies, healthcare, electricity, water in hopes that private companies can restore them. He cares more of foreign interests in hopes that investment alone may raise the country but investment rates are not yet significantly high, the millions are still in poverty and the economic growth rate only affects those in the middle class whose families are being sent by remittances from their parents or relatives abroad, if you don't have a relative abroad, you can't feel the economic growth. Businesses still don't have sufficient subsidization, the effects of recovering from Gloria's austerity measures are not yet being felt, we are still having the same fare prices, the same gas prices, higher electricity bills, flukes in the government and nothing big is actually being done by the presidential decrees itself to make sure every single corrupt official is put to justice.

His leadership is not corrupt though it's not as competent as desired by the people.

So you're saying that a socialist system be put in place? The fact of the matter is that these prices are because of our depreciating currency, if we allow the commies to take over our territory then the oil that is rightfully ours will not be squandered by a bunch of Chinese pigs from the commie party. Also the fact is, it's only been 4 years, in fact it's been 3. The point is you can't expect the President to do everything while the people beneath him (i.e. The Senate as a well known example) still have the right to question things that are obviously Constitutional, such as the FOI Bill, the RH Law, EDCA and so much more, especially since they're embroiled in this pork scam which dates back to the days of the wicked witch.

I refute that argument, i did not say anything about putting a socialist government in place. Noynoy's platform was already nice but he is not doing it well as how many of us back home had expected it. We of course, shall never become a puppet of China, the national anthem says so. What i am saying is that, if he really wants to endeavor all he believes in, he should effectively remove all bounds given by those beneath him at least temporarily so he could do what he has to do in this nation. Cha cha for example, he had nothing in mind like that or political reforms. This government needs a make over and that is what everyone wants him to do, except for the opposition, who covets presidency for the taxes and money or political influence as always.

Have you never read animal farm before? You know before Marcos' second term was his first, and I can honestly say that it was rather well, then he got reelected through corrupt means and eventually declared Martial Law, I'm not saying that it will happen with Noynoy, however I am saying that the people should have a certain say in politics, there is no totalitarianism for now democracy later, we know very well that Power Corrupts therefore we must be very careful when allowing anyone to have significant power.

I disagree, with an already corrupt system like this, measures indeed have to be taken as long as the person leading is careful enough not to slip. Noynoy is a person who does not have a hybrid centipede wife that asks him a thousand pair of shoes elects herself as ministry of human settlements, tries to buy the empire state building, makes lavish meetings and is spoiled by his husband. So it's easy to trusts someone as low key as him with the power to raise up the nation. Even without authoritarianism, he could had used his presidential assets for his own good but he didn't do it. He therefore is a potentially good leader who is just not doing enough. A true leader would not be yielded by corruption and would be single minded in his goal of raising up his own nation. Lee Kwan Yew was the most powerful man in Singapore but he managed to use it for the good of his people.

If martial law destroyed this nation, martial law can be used to make reforms top to bottom to rebuild this nation, or Noynoy could had just pushed for charter change instead to reform the government if he really wants total reform of the government. But he is doing neither of these things. If there was a referendum for a federalization and charter change, i can be sure a lot of people would sign it right away because they are hungry for change. Possibly even the Catholic church, who have some members which seek reforms because of the pork.

I would say that people reelected Marcos without corrupt means. Ut was the snap election that may have them. He did a good enough job at his first term so why not reelect ho? Then after that shit had hit the fan.

The fact is that our state has experienced totalitarianism before, giving someone significant powers is dangerous and yes more education has to be provided to voters (and the population in general) but it doesn't discourage the fact that the country is sick and tired of totalitarianistic governments, the most recent one being Arroyo's.

I know a lot of people that prefer a competent nationalistic dictatorship over an incompetent flawed democracy. Meaning there would be nothing wrong for many of us here in the country itself to establish a regime as long as it answers all the needs of the welfare of the people. Or else, they would be facing EDSA 5.

Well the likelihood of a successful democracy is proportionately greater than that of a totalitarian state.

Well, a totalitarian system fails but my point is that Noynoy needs to reform the system, even with drastic measures or not he has to reform the whole political system by remolding the constitution itself.

The only way he can do that is if he has at-least the support of 60-70% of the population, however given that around the same percentage is only a little smarter than Americans then we are doomed...

Guys.

We all want change.

More money. Better government officials. A better life.

It's only a matter of how.

Asigna says we should go totalitarian, with a wise man at the top and no incompetents below him.

Panta says we carry on with whatever we are doing right now.

I say we go socialist, with smart and honest people in government.

Seriously, people here would love a welfare state. Free education, free healthcare, free housing. It'll be great.
