For the sake of it, let's assume it is true. As problematic as it is, this is hardly the standard of water quality in Sochi. The air quality in Beijing was atrocious yet most people consider it as one of the best olympics to date. In time, these stories will be forgotten and placed in the 'stuff you may have missed section' and Sochi will be remembered for being the outstanding games that it was.

The second one is just some silly "waiter waiter, there's a fly in my soup story". You can find that stuff anywhere. Hardly a serious problem.

Krasnodar Krai, that's where Sochi is, has those thingies called mountains. They have natural snow from December to March. You don't think this is man made, do you?

Ergo, they can hold Winter Skiing events from January, until March. If there was only a month in between that, during which the Olympics can be held... oh wait, there is!

Depends on the area. It didn't happen where I lived, and that was the Nizhny Novogorod Oblast, at least not as far as I was aware, until Gorbafool's and YetlSIN's reforms kicked in.
