Screw petty revenge, I want Democrats treating every single bill (no matter how tiny and insignificant) as though it were re-legalizing slavery. Full out hysteria, grandstanding and general political mayhem. I want Democrats filibustering Congress with passages from the Communist Manifesto.

Oh, no, I didn't mean just blocking petty stuff. I mean that it's petty that I want this. Though it could probably be justified as letting them know that we aren't going to just lay down and let them trample us.

I bet he will join the rest of those racists in the Senate to N****block poor president Obama just because of his race...

I understand the visceral desire for that, but a little can go a long way; indeed, it can easily go too far and backfire badly. Maybe they should give in a bit on a few lesser points then use that in '16 saying "see, they got their way, and look what happened".

They would need 60 seats to be able to override any veto by Obama; they won't have that many.

If the Republicans won the House AND Senate, and Obama vetoes everything, he is being obstructionist. Not the Congress.

And?

Republican shortsightedness has set an unfortunate precedent.

1. They've put the Democrats in an awkward position where too much conciliation gives the Republicans a free pass to go out and crow, "See! We can get things done! We told you nothing in the last six years was our fault!" And you know they will, because 'subtlety' and 'tact' are currently considered dirty words in conservative circles.

2. At the same time they've demonstrated quite handily tonight that childish theatrics and obstructionism don't necessarily damage your ability to win elections at all.

So....exactly what is the Democrats incentive to play nice? Commit political suicide for the greater good?

Also, why should they?

Democrats have meekly bent over for Republican-administered ass-kickings more times than should be palatable to the Democratic base. This midterm was just another example of that. Democrats across the board not only abandoned their President but weakened their resolve on the issues that gain them traction; the minimum wage, equal pay, etc. What kind of message does that send to an already demoralized, disillusioned base? If anything, I think the Democrats need to play tougher ball with their Republican "colleagues" who've treated their last four years in the House majority and the past six years in the Senate minority like wartime with only one clear objective; outright obstructionism.

Democratic policy shops could crank out no proposal that Republicans wouldn't chew up and spit back into their faces. How on Earth will that situation be ameliorated with a new red Senate? All this talk of bipartisanship attempts to belie the utter stagnancy that will be President Obama's final two years in the White House.
