Really? The one real time they were used, they beat what was at the time the worlds most powerful military. If your talking about consistent loses, than the US militias are some of the last you should consider, simply because they haven't really lost a war (not saying they are a superpower or anything, but really...). And paramilitary groups aren't supposed to be a standing army. JROTCs and the like, are rather good at getting cadets into academy's and ROTCs and making great officers, the same officers that have accomplished some amazing military feats.

Not bad for their purpose. Much like the Sherman, they were not perfect but rather the tank their maker needed for that conflict.

Shermans lacked sloped side armor (the boxy design made them much easier to transport via ship and lander), ran off the same fuel as the massive numbers of aircraft the Allies deployed, were moderately fast to support a rapid advance, and most importantly, were mechanically dependable and easily repaired as their factories were one U-boat infested ocean that way. Parts from several destroyed Shermans could even be assembled into one (usually) functional one with enough work, meaning less need to wait for a scheduled convoy to bring replacement tanks and parts and leaving more room for said convoy to bring other equipment.

It just so happens that the mechanical reliability and easy repairs and modifications left the Sherman in a better way post-war, when they were sold off to various nations that needed moderately good tanks or employed by their creator in one last hurrah in Korea.
