Not really. They take advantage of our tribal nature as well as our lust for spectacle and triumph.

Is this a new hipster thing where you must deliberately point out to everyone that you don't like something?

When they could just ignore said something in the fits place.

How is that football's fault???? It's the people who give their money to the competitors, not the competitors or the game's fault. Go take your little complaints elsewhere.

And, no, no it's not.

Well it's just really over-hyped that's all...

I mean if you break all the sports down to their basic components, you see a set of rules that are really very primitive and physical. And the tendency for these rules to be played out over several mundane hours really shouldn't make good televised material...

which is why I'm surprised televised sports games have not yet been supplanted by something far more exciting...

It becomes even more meta (and therefore more hipster) to deliberately point out how much you hate hipsters.

If pointing out to people you don't like something is hipster then I think there have been hipsters for a verrrryyyyy long time

And I am no hipster, but I also don't get distracted by bread and circuses

I don't see any problem with them being "really very primitive and physical." And, yeah, sports tend to have an element of physical activity. As I said, just because you say something (such as, "this is boring") does NOT make it so. Your opinions are not some fiat.

Again, you opinion does not equal the facts. It is exciting to me and to millions of others. You don't like it, then don't watch it.

Then go ahead and do it. Is someone forcing you to watch it???

From time to time people like me get discriminated against in society because we don't like to watch a group of people in tights kicking/handling balls around for hours...

I think this should change...

The exception I make in generalizing is sports fans and fans of shitty music.

Over a sample size of several thousand people I have met in my life, 0 of them who likely sports ever interested me, and 0 of them who ever liked shitty music interested me.

I know, but there seems to be a strong correlation between anti-intellectualism and being a fan of sports in my experience.

NSG might be an exception to this.

Even if we assume that is predominant, I would venture to remind you of a rather old scientific maxim. You may have heard it before, so maybe you can even guess it.

it would certainly make some sense as a general trend...

I mean, watching a few people kick/handle balls around for hours and hours on end just to see a few numbers go up...

doesn't strike me as terribly intellectual a pursuit. It could have a sort of spill-over effect into other areas of one's life...

Now of course this is all theory.
