Have you ever gone to public school? Or were you indoctrinated into believe they're bad?

No, not at all.
Some teachers I meet are total, rambling idiots, who do absolutely nothing. Then, you hear things about "my son/daughter wasn't allowed in such and such school for his/her sexuality/beliefs", or there is times when teachers or other students bully.

The federal government should decide upon the curriculum and provide the spending while the individual states should handle the actual running/execution of the federal law on the schools.

The New World Oceania wrote:After reading a considerable (read: fallacious) argument as to why public schools indoctrinate children, the thought came to mind,

Who should run schools and other education systems, particularly in the United States?

The argument I read said something to the effect of "schools indoctrinate according to who runs them; Texas teaches creationism because that's what politicians like." To which the response came that this was an argument for the Federal government to take over education. I feel that, if anything, more control should be given to the administration of the school in concern of the curriculum and management. The majority of public school students and graduates, I imagine, have experienced at least some idiocy on behalf of a central administration.

*Ahem*NCLB is a bad word*Ahem*

Such an argument is considerably fallacious, indeed, but they're right in that children are indoctrinated.

This is because of the influence of the federal government. Forcing the standard of learning to be the same for all communities deprives the school administrations of their authority, penalizes good performance, and subsidizes failure. No Child Left Behind was another federal power-grab that - surprise, surprise - left children behind as states and communities found they had no choice but to cut corners to ensure the academic success of an increasingly ignorant (and rapidly dwindling) body of students.

The alternatives to public schooling should at least slow the fall of our nation's academic system. The growing number of private and charter schools is promising, as are the averaged test results from families that homeschool.

I guess it takes a village to raise a child, not a bureaucracy.

Obviously, the government.
I oppose religious education (which really is indoctrination) but if secular private schools can prove themselves to be competitive I think they should be permitted.
Homeschooling and correspondence schooling are also valid in my opinion.

So what's your solution? Install a police officer for every student to prevent bullying? Allow parents to have everything they want for their child, even at the expense of other students? The school system has to take millions of students from different ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds and give them an education that could prepare them for any college. That means a student from the poorest place in the country could theoretically move up through society thanks to the education they're provided. A few individuals might be a problem, but the system works very well considering the incredible challenge it is to provide a fair education for the third largest country on the planet.
