Who Should Run Schools?

Postby The New World Oceania » Wed Jan 01, 2014 5:52 pm

After reading a considerable (read: fallacious) argument as to why public schools indoctrinate children, the thought came to mind,

Who should run schools and other education systems, particularly in the United States?

The argument I read said something to the effect of "schools indoctrinate according to who runs them; Texas teaches creationism because that's what politicians like." To which the response came that this was an argument for the Federal government to take over education. I feel that, if anything, more control should be given to the administration of the school in concern of the curriculum and management. The majority of public school students and graduates, I imagine, have experienced at least some idiocy on behalf of a central administration.

I don't even trust the government in any elected form on any level with this. Maybe a non-elected board of academic leaders like college presidents, school administrators, and what not on a state level.

The government.

That way we can teach the kids taxes are good, veterans are bad, the NSA is protecting you, and Obama single-handedly saved the economy and gave us universal healthcare.

I think the Government would teach that veterans are good just to lure more students into the US war machine upon graduation.

teachers should have final say, but a democratic process involving teachers and students primarily, not those not who are not directly involved in the educational process, should be in charge of determining things like details of curriculum, choice of textbooks, structure of teaching methods and so on.

boards of 'trustees' and even non-teaching administrators, are the 'too many cooks' who are spoiling the cuisine that results.

education is a process between educators, who's role is to ensure students access to real and useful understanding, information resources, and the aquisition of knowledge and abilities, and their students, who, like all sapient beings, are born with a hunger to learn all things that appeal to their interest in them.

it is a great disservice to students and the socienty they will inhieret, to stifle that thurst for knowledge and understanding, by obstructing their access to real and useful information, on the basis of arbitrary and unreasoned priorities, as is the prevalent case, in today's education system in america, and i can only assume, in many parts of the world, to the degree they are under america's influence.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

I think schools should be organised at the county/city government level, taxes and all.

I find that one should instead be asking how we can reduce the amount of bias towards certain ideologies, political bents, etc within schools, public or otherwise.

I mean, seriously, the common (or uncommon, whatever) claim that public schools indoctrinate children due to being run by the government must logically be extended to schools run by other parties.

Said parties could 'indoctrinate' children.*

*Nevermind that children are 'indoctrinated' on a daily basis by being exposed to different viewpoints throughout all walks of life. It's inevitable.

States should run schools. The Federal government shouldn't have itself involved in matters of Education.
Also, Private and Private Religious schools should be able to function as well.

I imagine stupidity will run rampant in any public school in regards to the administration. Let's make it easier to fire incompetent teachers, and that would solve a lot of problems. Or at least fire the abusive ones, considering the only way you can fire a teacher after a couple of years is if they commit a felony or something.

Because we totally aren't cutting costs when it comes to the military.

A small group of democratically elected officials with degrees in education, medicine, etc, and have a good record in equality and liberty for students and teachers.
