A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on knowledge that has been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experimentation. In the absence of evidence to the contrary, it's a fact. A law is a statement based on repeated experimental observations, while a theory is the explanation.
