Do you get people you just met mixed up?

Postby Zaldakki » Sun Dec 29, 2013 5:09 am

If I'm somewhere where I meet a bunch of new people, like at a new school or on a cruise or something, I get a lot of people's faces confused at the beginning. As time goes on howevet, the people start to look more and more different. Often, I feel embarassed in hindsight for even thinking they looked alike, even if no one knew I thought that. Am I the only one who experiences this?

I'm generally fucking awful with names.

I've called people who I've known for years by different names, often cycling through names (including my own) before getting the correct one.

It is pretty common, and there are memory techniques for overcoming it with practice if you care to find them. We just are not that good at remembering two entirely new things and connecting them, so we need to link them to things we are already familiar with.

This happens to me at nightclubs. Mostly because 99% of women there have blonde hair and dress in black tops and such, making them really indistinguishable.. especially when you're drunk. A few weeks ago, I talked with a girl in a bar on four separate occasions and I thought I had met four different people :p

Otherwise I'm pretty good with names.

No. Once I've seen a face or heard a name, they are immediately and irrevocably scorched into my mind, such that I can never mix up anyone, ever, in any situation. This is what all humans are like.

YES!

Goodness, names. Why do we need you? Well, apart from self-identity, emotional warmth and poking fun. And for looking good with a title...

You know, cancel that. We need names.
But why do they all have to be so different?

Honestly, I love names. Especially odd ones or foreign ones. But still. Why do some people have to be called Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116?

Or not, I've always been bad at memorising names, now faces, I can always remember a face.

I'm great at keeping people sorted in my mind by faces and I can remember tidbits I pick up well enough. Names on the other hand slip right past me into the aether and I forget them all the time, sometimes even people I've known for a long time.

I have a good memory for faces. I am embarrassingly bad at remembering names. Unless it's a really unusual name, I have to use a mnemonic or it won't stick the first, second or even third time.
My name is voiced AIL-EE-AIL-EE-AH. My time zone: UTC.

I wish men wouldn't call themselves either Bill or Bob. I had a grandfather (step-grandpa actually, dead now) whose name was Bill. The only way I can be sure of that is to use the mnemonic "he died and left my grandma with the bill" ... which is hardly a respectful way to remember the dead.

I'm awful with names and faces. It takes a while for me to remember people. "Hello there!" has been my standard greeting to people in the street, where "Hello [Graham|Alan|Archibald|Randolph|Anthony|Ferdinand|Clarissa]!" would have been the more targetted greeting.

Although I usually eventually get it right. Still, for one of my old bosses I would often keep on referencing them by the name of a previous boss (from a totally different company, a decade earlier). Totally different names, as well, not a simple slip.
