Because 1. he is a fictional character that represent the spirit of Christmas, and therefore has no race inherently attached to him to begin with. 2. Because the connotation that only a white man can legitimately represent the spirit of generosity and giving in the Christmas season.

Because the connation is important when dealing with what he represent, while the argument from tradition to protect this representation of the spirit of holiday generosity as white, with all the connation that flows from it, is based primarily on fictious traditions.
