Good intent, wrong method of delivery. By outlawing it, you could also argue that being a pyromaniac. Instead, India should have simply criminalized marrying homosexuals and the act of homosexual sex, just like arson, not being a pyromaniac, is often illegal . That way the afflicted are not discriminated against for being who they are, but reprimanded for doing something wrong.

Because of the invasions led by the Hephthalite empire, the Muslims, because Buddhism only appealed to certain ethnic groups in the Indian Himalaya and a strain of the merchant class and other reasons.

There are quite a lot of Buddhists in India, too.

And I wouldn't say they are more accepting of things. Look at the religious violence in Burma, for example.
