No. It's called a pre-emptive strike. It would have been how the Cold War went hot.
Besides, the strike was well after dawn and lasted for several hours. This is the time at which air defence troops should have been most alert. In fact, there were a series of points at which an attack could have been predicted and prepared for. All were either missed or outright ignored.

And, had Japanese intelligence correctly pinpointed the American carrier location, then it would have been a successful one.

Besides, assault is not the action of the coward.

Nobody thought the Japanese were stupid enough to attack the US, and if they did, they figured that the Philippines would be attacked first.

Well, they tried to deliver the DoW just before the attack started. Turns out Murphy's law is in effect back then as well.

Actually, this seems to be a recurring event in American History. Every time we finish kicking somebody's ass, everybody is all like "Pfft, America, what are they gonna do?", and some fool decides to get involved in a war with us. I can't understand for the life of me why people underestimate America's resolve.

Mostly because USA was not a global powerhouse back then, but a country that was not really spectacular apart from covering half of the continent. It was like a warmer version of Canada with a weak military both in terms of equipment and number, and maybe morale as well. Total mobilisation was a new thing back then, and even then few anticipated how effective USA was in terms of turning its industrial infrastructure into a war machine.

Well, to be fair, everyone else did as well. Japan just happened to be at the short end of the stick when USA mobilised.

Actually, this seems to be a recurring event in American History. People who survived both bombs are still living well into their seventies, eighties, even into their nineties. Many are still alive today.

Only a quarter of initial survivors died in the two months following the bombing. Some of these will have been due to severe burn and blast related injuries, others still from delayed radiation sickness.
After two months, deaths began tailing off significantly.

Because keeping the same braindead leadership with complete control of the country's military infrastructure works well in preventing future wars. [/sarcasm]

Japan was not willing to accept anything less than what was effectively a white peace, and given how its government functioned back then, it would be more like a truce of a decade or so than true peace.

Considering the fact that the United States had been breaching the Monroe Doctrine by supplying Britain with weapons, I can't exactly say that Japan wasn't justified in attacking the US.
