How should the US handle relations with China?

Postby Blasveck » Mon Dec 02, 2013 4:28 pm

It's been a while since we've had a foreign policy thread so I figured, why not?

With Vice President Biden's visits in the Eastern Pacific, the US and China are going to be competing for influence and trade partners within that area.

So, NSG, how do you think the US (or China, take your pick) should move forward with relations in that area?
Should the US move forward with a more militaristic bent?
Or seek better trade opportunities?
Should it strengthen relations with its two best allies in the region, Japan and South Korea?

Because as China's power grows, so does its' desire for Pacific dominance. And with partners like Japan and South Korea, the US certainly isn't interested in sharing power.

What say ye, NSG?

Keep relations with SK and Japan good. Improve and reach out to other countries (such as India). Continue the pivot to Asia. Keep trade ties open with China.

Obviously we should make clear our support for free and democratic elections to ensure the Kuomintang does not institute a one-party state as they had for a while. Maintaining our posture of trade and military guarantee of their sovereignty in the face of their rebellious provinces on the mainland would probably be helpful as well.

The US-China economic relationship seems to be taking a frosty turn. The US is constantly complaining about Chinese export subsidization and currency manipulation (some are even suggesting retaliatory tariffs as an option), and is trying to block a lot of technology exchanges from going on (the ban on Chinese nationals visiting NASA facilities and the various aerospace trade restrictions, for example).

Some people in Washington are convinced that the PRC is the next "evil empire" that must be contained. I would favor a more open (though still reserved) relationship with China. Political reforms are kind of inevitable as their middle class and economy grows.

Keep applying pressure on those civil rights issues, and not get involved in the territorial rows the PRC has with its neighbors. They'll sort it out themselves.

David cameron is visiting china at the moment for trade talks, but they requested that he never meet with the Dalai lama again or else trade is off the menu, to which he agreed. Personally I'm torn between the economic security of Britain and my ethics. I'm aware money should come second to morality but ruining relations with china isn't likely to change there stance on human rights.

The US use to have very good ties to China during WW II. So why not continue this historical trend. When it comes to territories claimed by China and Japan, they needed to work this out but only years after the war ended. Afterll, China had more pressing problems since it was involved in a civil war and then in economic development and rebuilding of the economy.

The US should seek better trade relations with China; China is already looking at the US dollar warily, and it is best to make it easy for them to retain their confidence in the US's currency. Furthermore, enough with the complaining about the Chinese artificially keeping the yuan low; the US needs China's savings if they are going to be able to sustain their enormous public and private debt, and it's not as though many of the US's products are worth exporting anyway.

Furthermore, the US should find a way to extricate itself from the situation concerning North and South Korea, so that the preceding and their neighbors can work things out; China doesn't like having such craziness on its border, but it sure as Hell doesn't want any US style regime change so close to home.

How should the US handle relations with China? Carefully.
Your nation is like a son. What it does right is your merit, as well as what it does wrong is your fault. When you praise it, be lucid and avoid exaggeration. Praising it too much can make it indolent. On the other hand, when you criticize it, be harsh, but do not ridicule it. Do your best to improve it, not through derision or disdain, but through good examples and dedication.

Yeah. Taiwan should declare independence, be admitted in the UN and have American support.

Perhaps we should actually collaborate, since we are on the downward slope of history. We can't maintain empire forever. We can either break and fall, or bend and float. I would prefer the latter.
This Debate is simply an exercise in Rhetoric. Truth is a fickle being with no intentions of showing itself today.
