People were often too scared to be open about being LGBT, I'd imagine. So while there wasn't vast scale oppression, people who were caught being homosexual/committing homosexual acts were oppressed, murdered, jailed, marginalized, stigmatized, stereotyped, etc. just like other minorities.

At the time when racial segregation laws were being dropped, and public opinion was shifting towards a more racially inclusive philosophy, acceptance of LGBT people was close to non-existent. Heck, even in the 1990's, opposition for LGBT rights was overwhelmingly majoritarian.
