Yes! We need a republic!

Sorry but in this scenario the parliament will probably still be dominated by rich white guys.

It's pathetic, we don't even have our own head of state. It's time to get out of feudal times, remove the feudal idea of the monarchs.

Being an Australian old enough to have voted for a republic the last time while I applaud the G-G's comments it's set against the glassy eyed stare and mouth breathing component of the Australian electorate who live in apathy or ignorance.

What happened at the last referendum is that not only was the electorate uninformed it had no political consciousness to speak of. Why would you vote for something if you don't even get it? To make matters worse the PM at the time deliberately changed the debate from should we become a republic to what form of government should a republic have? Setting of a schism between presidential and parliamentary republicans. And for the public that was way over their heads.

Would Australia be better of being a republic? Of course the past couple of centuries have been about the formation of independent nation-states and the toppling of anachronistic social orders that do not reflect modern times. But without an existential crisis to push the public to such a conclusion we have to rely on each citizen taking the time to educate themselves. Highly unlikely that's going to happen...

I'm not sure a serving Governor-General should be suggesting the abolition of the monarchy. She's entitled to her view, but her duty is to be neutral in exercising her role, and to take into consideration the feelings of monarchist Australians too. She could have waited until she had retired, before speaking up on the topic.

That aside, I have no strong feelings on the matter. Looking at it from the outside, I don't even see it as an important matter for Australia. So, whatever a majority of Australians decide. It's your country to shape as you see fit. :)

Zonolia wrote:So probably an dumb question but if Australia does indeed drop Her Majesty...will anything actually change apart from the Queen having absolutely no power? I mean the government system would remain the same minus a Queen right? or...

The Queen already has absolutely no power in Australia. (Or in the UK, for that matter.) She's purely a symbol. As for the nature of a potential future Australian republic… There are a variety of views, and the matter isn't settled.

The simplest would probably be to follow the Indian model. (Which, in the Pacific, is also used in Vanuatu, more or less.) Leave executive power in the hands of the Prime Minister, and have a non-partisan, ceremonial president elected by the legislature.

Darwinish Brentsylvania wrote:Australia should become fully independent from the UK, I mean they are so far from Great Britain and I think most of the world would support them on this

Australia already is fully independent from the UK. Australia is an entirely sovereign nation.

Bojikami wrote:I just don't like the idea of some foreign monarch having rule over some country that isn't even a part its empire anymore.

She doesn't. The Queen does not rule in Australia.

A constitutional monarchy defines a country's greatness and empowers the will of the people to do what should be done.

Her Majesty the Queen is "a fountain of power", Her Majesty is simply a symbol where her governments across the Commonwealth get and exercise authority from, "in Her Majesty's behalf". The people has more power than Her Majesty but, what reason is there to hate her? The only reason why the Queen is not known to Australians and other Commonwealth realms as their head of state is because their respective governments are irresponsible went it comes to educating their people about their respective politics!

I have no idea why do they do this?! >:(

Anyways, God save the Queen of Australia, down with republicans. :palm:

P.S
SHE MAY BE THE QUEEN OF THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND BUT SHE IS ALSO THE QUEEN OF AUSTRALIA, NEVER CALL THEIR QUEEN AS U.K'S BUT OF THEIRS! SHE IS THE QUEEN OF AUSTRALIA.

This is why I hate republicans. They express themselves freely without feeling any shame at all.

Why would God save them when they have the nerve being atheists.

Why should we be ashamed of loving freedom and democracy? How do we have nerve by not worshipping a nonexistent being?

I would fully support an Australian republic. We should also change the flag, to represent our independence from the UK.
