A well-polished boot is a thing of beauty. I would have opted for that, unless, of course, there were other consequences to not going to church.

We didn't do any training on Sundays, so I still had the rest of the day to shine my boots.

I'm an Atheist, I'm also against War, Consumerism, Greed, Curruption, fundamentalism, Poverty, Misery and Suffering.
These are the values I share during the Holiday season.
I feel most Christains don't even follow Jesus's message, give an share much as you can to the poor, sick, crippled and dying. Show goodwill to all mankind. Love your friends family, neighbours and even enemies. Choose peace and love over war and hate. I don't give worthless luxuries to a bunch of priviledged rich 1st worlders. Instead I give to those who really need it. I don't pay lip service to peace, the end of war and poverty I campaign and perform real activism against it. John Lennon's two single most important songs display this perfectly.

I don't care what other atheists do. There's no point in asking whether we "should" or "shouldn't" because it's all up to their choice.

As an atheist, I rarely think of such holidays as Christian holidays. Although I am quite aware they are Christian holidays, they have kinda sold out to the masses, and contain a lot less Christian media. Clerks aren't even allowed to say merry Christmas anymore. Such holidays are almost entirely secularized now, outside of the church, anyways. So, yes, atheists can celebrate these holidays, just not in a religious matter. They shouldn't have to, though.

Yes, the Catholic Church celebrates the Saturnalia. It calls them "Carnival".

I am an atheist and I still celebrate Christmas because my family does, but also because in America, Christmas is more of a cultural holiday nowadays. I have Hindu and Muslim friends who don't necessarily "celebrate" Christmas but their parents will get them something because it's a fun holiday, not that they're celebrating Jesus's birth. So I think that everyone should be able to celebrate Christmas no matter what religion they practice if any; the only thing is that people are already entitled to that right, it's just a personal choice. I don't even know why there's a thread for this...
