Sad times for the people of the Ukraine... Whilst joining the EU's trade pact wouldn't of cured their problems over night, it would of been a great step in the right direction. It certainly would of helped them out more than cozying up to Russia. Also may I add, fuck Putins sphere of influence.

Whatever some politicos (or users on some message boards) say - there are spheres of influence. The mere fact, that several Russian delegations had talks with some Middle Eastern countries (like Egypt), had already produced a half-panicked, half-angry outcry in the western media. And any attempt to strengthen the relations with any Sudamerican country (especially with Venezuela) were viewed as "Caribbean crisis 2.0 in the making" and "violation of Monroe doctrine".

This treaty with Ukraine could be a first step for that country membership in EU... and NATO. Now, seriously, what you, westerners did expect? That RF suddenly says: "Sure! Do whatever you want near our borders! We'll just crawl into a corner and die!". Sorry, nope - no more good ol' Eltsin for you. And please, stop this nonsense about "bringing light of freedom to the oppressed" - after 15 years of smart-bombing countries into democracies, only total cretins or total sell outs gonna believe you.

Last time I was on Ukrain (на Украине), people looked anything but some starving oppressed Ruritanian peasants. Khreshchatyk was amazing. No one insulted or attacked moscal' like me or my friends. A lot of Ukrainians work in Russia and have relatives here. Moscow, not EU, is Kiev's biggest trading partner (and chief gas supplier). EU-association won't magically change that, while consistent good relations with Russia (and, probably, with the Customs Union) would save Ukraine a lot of grief improve economic situation in not so distant future.

Someone win, someone loose. It's real life politics, not comic book about super-teams struggles.
