The Russian govt. has said they have no intentions on Eastern Ukraine with its Russian population. So it seems they were just interested in Crimea which was once part of Russia.

Of course, without the one million Russian Ukrainian voters, Pro-Russians candidates for the Ukraine Presidency will have a much harder time getting elected. It seems the Crimea Russian vote is essential to any Pro-Russian candidate running for the Presidency of Ukraine.
