It was even worse before Chavez took power. I'm not a fan of Chavez, but Venezuela was ruined. Venezuela is ruined. Inflation is spking. They didn't reduce poverty as much as other Latin American countries with fairly capitalistic economies did. They're extremely dependent on oil.
