In reference to the stargate idea- if 3 people went through at once and it took about 4 days for 3 million to go through- it would take almost 7 years alone to get everyone through OF THE CURRENT population- thats not even accounting for the millions upon millions perhaps billions of babies that will be born in that time.

The nations of Earth are too proud to help each other in a scale to evacuate the entirety of humanity to space before such an event. Religion would play its part in destabilizing any projects, and the even bigger issue of Race would stop any cooperative project altogether. Anyone who was be able to escape would face the hatred of the race of the world and some fool would most likely shoot them down or sabotage the spacecraft before it left the atmosphere. In addition, the cost of evacuating humanity with be well over the present size of the global economy to cope, even at the most optimistic growth rates.

Anything short of absolute world government would fail, and even a united human government would be unable to pull it off. Religion and charges of corruption would impede any serious effort, and more likely there would be a major rebellion in response to the dictatorial powers that government would need to force mankind to work to escape.

I watched a documentary called Evacuate Earth not long ago and they believed it would take something like 70 years to plan and build a ship capable of something like this and even then it only took a couple of million people out of the 7 billion people on Earth.

So no, I don't think we could do it in 15 years.

We'd have a tough time doing it in 70 years, let alone it would be quite frankly impossible in 15 unless we had the technology and everything ready for us.

I'd imagine mild panic would ensue. Money wouldn't figure any more. The military would take those deemed most important to science and the future of humanity and evacuate.

If we do one million people very four days, then that's 91 million people per year.
Not nearly enough.

So any other sort of solution more plausible would have to leave people behind.
Back to Stargate, the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread was an episode I watched recently. A world was doomed. They knew it was going to happen. They built four ships with a few hundred people on each. Held a lottery to determine who would go on.
That sort of thing seems more likely, in my mind, than everyone being saved. And since we don't have ways of preserving people indefinitely (Or at all, really), we'd have to have a functional ecosystem on the ship(s).
