Why does everyone hate Milton Keynes?

Postby The chrisman union » Sun Nov 29, 2009 1:26 pm

I was just watching The Joy of Motoring on BBC 2, and it had a bit on it about Milton Keynes. Like everything else on TV about Milton Keynes, he complained about just about everything to do with it. I live in Milton Keynes, and it's a brilliant town. There's very little pollution (in contrary to what the idiot on the telly said), it's very green and very nice people live there. What's not to like about it?

It has Airkix which is a big plus in my book but as they're building a better one in Manchester that plus is going to be removed soon.

Until now, I'd never heard of it. It looks like a sucky town though.

I also live there and can confirm that it is a great place to live. Very green town and easy to navigate.

If It has any relation to Lord Keynes, I already hate it.
If you have any questions please let me know. I'd be happy to help in any way I can.

Indeed. I mean, Maynard and Milton both start with Ms, and two-word-names-where-both-names-sound-like-those-of-people are not that common for towns.

I have a British friend who is (was) a supporter of a club called 'Wimbledon FC'... he despises Milton Keynes for some reason.

Think about the numbers in terms that we can relate to. Remove eight zeros from the numbers and pretend it is the household budget for the fictitious Jones family:
-Total annual income for the Jones family: $21,700
-Amount of money the Jones family spent: $38,200
-Amount of new debt added to the credit card: $16,500
-Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710

-Amount cut from the budget: $385

MK is a lot like most of the suburban south. I'm not sure what there is to hate about it, other than I fancy it's a bit boring. The Dons aren't much of a football club, but having a shite football club can be a good marker of a town. Look at Oxford. Then again, look at Leeds...

Quite simple, MK Dons are the old Wimbledon FC. I wouldn't be happy about that either if I was a Wimbledon FC fan

Now that's just cruel.

Nothings as bad a Hell, sorry, Hull.

It's reputation is a hangover from when it was built. It was always considered a bit of a joke, an artificial town in a country of organic ones. People didn't like the road system, the 'modern' architecture etc... it all just felt souless.

I hear however that as people have actually lived there and it's grown beyond it's original conception, it's gotten better, but the reputation remains.

I've heard that it's alot like America with its street grid system, but with slightly less fat people and a less dramatic police force.

Spoken like a true Norfolk native :p

Most places in the UK have some sort of stereotype attached for them, it's part of a great national tradition combining two of our favorite pastimes, complaining and piss taking. I mean I'm currently living just down the road from Portsmouth and we all know the reputation Pompey has.

the road system is bullshit, some guy couldn't be arsed doing the street names (I've been lost in the place >.<), the train station seems to have the odd attributes of being both authoritarian in feel and also a complete clusterfuck etc etc

don't get me started on the scruffy lot that live there its like chaventry for petes sake

but then of course I will hate you I'm Northantonian :p
