Today's USA? None. One of the fifty essentially independent states that would result from the OP's idea to permanently shut down the federal government? Give me a replica shotgun and a bottle of whiskey and I'll take over four by the end of the week.

Currently none, however the OP is suggesting breaking up the current government.

You need a federal government and a president for that.

That would be a horrible idea and what would stop the states with nukes from taking over/pushing around the other ones?

The federal government and the fact that it owns the nukes and isn't about to turn them over to any state governments, no matter how shutdown it gets.

Man..disintegration of the federation would lead to going back to a confederation (we know how well that worked out) or into 50 odd competing states, while this may or may not lead to the European miracle during the 16th century onwards, i recommend that keeping the Union is the best situation, your forefathers experimented with Confederation in the Articles of Confederation and that took a nose dive, the Federal Union was at the time their unique solution and it has worked, its the bipartisanship with Two Party nation that has screwed it over. So this shutdown should end before you default on the 17th, preferably.

"In Texas" doesn't mean "property of Texas". See: Fort Sumter.

And as my last point, The Federal Government was created to govern for the people, if you remember the three points made by Lincoln, a lot of issues stem from those advocating more power to the states, your government should keep trying to work for you instead of working for the states, as politicians seem to like more of late. Just my opinion.

When the federal government "shutdowns" forever, noone could enforce the past laws of it.

Nah. Besides all of the other ways that this is a terrible idea, doing so would take a sledgehammer to the US' ability to conduct scientific and technical research for decades to come.

Unless the federal government literally dies, as in every member of it falls down dead, they won't be giving their nuclear weapons to anyone. Maybe, maybe, they would give them to Britain and France if the alternative was to let them fall into the hands of the various state governments.
