Except for the fact that you speak Asturian and Spanish :p

What I heard from a friend of mine, it is one parent one language. His son speaks Croatian and Spanish. Croatian with his mom, Spanish with his father. It works apparently.

Which verifies what I said earlier. If done properly, a child can learn 2 languages at the same time without him/her being confused. Your friend, for example. He speaks both languages, albeit one for each parent. :)

My first fluent language didn't have a name. My first six didn't have names, either, beyond "How those guys talk." Well, that's not completely true, we did used to call the way Arch's tribe talked "Bird Twitters." Then I learned the eme-gir, the "native tongue" of the Black-Headed People, which, let me tell you, was a pain.

Are you from Amish Country somewhere? My uncle (and his kids) speak "Pennsylvania Dutch" (which just sounds like an old, colloquial German) passably. They're from an area in Wisconsin with a fairly large Amish population.

English was the language I grew up speaking. German was my first foreign language, which I can read entire books in without having to go to a dictionary too often.

I took Spanish in the 8th and 9th grade, but I still suck at it, so English is the only language I know.

First Fluent Language?

Postby Parhe » Fri Oct 18, 2013 12:37 am

What is the first language you learned fluently? Korean
Did you learn from from your family or elsewhere (school, neighborhood, etc.)? My maternal grand parents.
Is this language you group up speaking? Sort of as I continue speaking it fluently every day.
Or did you grow up bilingual? Also I did sort of.
If such is the case, can you note what languages you learned and how they were used (perhaps one was only used in school, with distant family, neighbors, etc.)? I began learning little English in kindergarten when I was five. Did not really though until I was eight in third grade, became fluent by fourth grade. English was my primary language in public and school, living in America and all. Korean I used in family, church, the general Korean community, and with most my close friends.
Is your language the dominant/official language of the nation or area you live in? English is by far. Korean isn't but I easily find speakers of Korean all around me every day in Dallas even when I am not in a "Koreatown."
If you grew up learning more than one main language, is that something to be expected of kids where you live? In some way. Most children of Korean parents here are expected to become fluent in Korean and English. Geographically, as in the physical area I was in rather than the "community" I grew up in, it wasn't anything really expected but most people I knew in school knew multiple languages.
Also, if there are a number of dialects of the language you speak, what one do speak (or grew up with in the area you live in)? I suppose Korean and American English have dialects. I spoke the North Gyeongsang dialect of Korean and the "Texan" dialect of English.
Hey, it is Parhe :D I am always open to telegrams.
I know it is a Work-In-Progress, but I would love it if y'all looked at my new factbook and gave me some feedback!

Alevuss wrote:Or did you grow up bilingual? If such is the case, can you note what languages you learned and how they were used (perhaps one was only used in school, with distant family, neighbors, etc.)?

I grew up speaking both English and Spanish, but English became my dominant language mainly because I used it for everything but home.

Alevuss wrote:Is your language the dominant/official language of the nation or area you live in?
Yes, English is one of the two official languages of Canada, but in Ontario French isn't very strong.

Alevuss wrote:If you grew up learning more than one main language, is that something to be expected of kids where you live?
In Ontario children are taught French in school but no one is truly expected to be fluent in French, unless they are applying for a government job. So being bilingual is not really expected of anyone.

Alevuss wrote:Also, if there are a number of dialects of the language you speak, what one do speak (or grew up with in the area you live in)?
I speak Canadian English, of the South Western Ontario variant. So for all you Americans near the Great Lakes... our accents are pretty much the same. Except I actually do say "eh" from time to time.

Alevuss wrote:I also apologize if your language is not listed as one of the nine named specifically above, but I based the options off of expected majorities on this site, internet usage and penetration by country, and the most commonly spoken languages in the world.
I seriously doubt that because Spanish is one of most widely spoken languages in the world, and the United States alone would have a lot of internet users and the US also has a lot of Spanish speakers...

Like Arfrikaans? How many people were you really expecting to speak Afrikaans? No offence to Afrikaans or anything, but based on the criteria listed for languages to be a poll option... Afrikaans doesn't seem to fit the bill as much as Spanish.

I mean I could be biased but... I'm pretty sure Spanish is more widely spoken than half of those languages up there. Nothing personal or against you OP, I'm just a little confused by your choice of poll options based on the criteria.
