Odd question. Bear with me. :p

You mentioned Tamilish. The Tamil, how do they feel about being included too under that umbrella term? I know they're fiercely nationalistic.

Under the umbrella term of Hindi?

We don't include them under that term. They have a very different language and it is recognised as such.

Then I guess the author of the book was mistaken. He included them under the umbrella term. Thanks for the clarification.

I live in Finland. Finnish is the dominant language here, although there are a few areas in Finland where Swedish is dominant. Besides that I'm speaking Finnish I'm also speaking Swedish. I live in a bilingual family. So, I learned them at the same time. Swedish is used in my school. I speak Swedish in an accent, which differs from the standard Swedish in the sense that I don't think it's an accent or a dialect -- or it doesn't sound like so in my ears. I think Standard Swedish is more like an accent than Finland Swedish. :p

I find it most amusing that Afrikaans is included on the poll, but not Dutch.

Anyroad, I like to think I was raised nearly bilingual.

I first learnt Cantonese as I was born in Hong Kong. I immigrated to the US at the age of two, but within my family we continue to speak Cantonese exclusively to this day. Therefore I was fluent in Cantonese by the time I went to preschool, where I then first began learning English through school.

My first fluent language is English. I know some Spanish, but not enough to independently get around any Spanish-speaking majority community. Besides those two, I do know some words from at least a half dozen other languages.

Yeah, sorry about that. I had forgotten that a lot of NSers speak Dutch, enough so to have their own thread. I was trying to base the main nine choices off of the nationalities that seem to use NS the most, have large numbers of internet users, and commonly spoken languages. I realize Afrikaans isn't one of these, but it felt strange to not have a widely spoken language from each continent or cultural sphere. Afrikaans was chosen since, based off of past surveys of the site, few here speak Arabic and South Africa has the highest number of internet users in Africa below Nigeria and Egypt.

Of course, though, we seem to have a similar amount of speakers of Arabic as we do Afrikaans. The choices are an error on my part born out of limitation and a poor attempt at representation.
