What kind of Atheist are you?

Postby Viinborg » Sun Oct 13, 2013 9:39 am

As what kind of Atheist would you describe yourself?

Here's a breakdown of the options:
- Richard Dawkins: Atheist (within a very reasonable margin of error)
- Daniel Dennett: Bright
- Christopher Hitchens: Antitheist
- Sam Harris: Nothing (just like I don’t need to remind myself that I am a ‘non-astrologer’)

In this brief poll I have listed four well-known options - you may find another terminology more appropriate. If so, feel free to discuss it. Personally, I subscribe to Harris' view.
"Reality has a well-known liberal bias." - Steven Colbert

I didn't realize atheism was solely defined by the beliefs of four middle aged WASP males.

...I dont think you fully understand the terms...

Casing point, all 4 of them are/were anti-theists.
That includes Sam Harris despite his odd breif stint of "we should not be called atheists" despite the absurdity of still qualifying as atheists. Indeed though im unaware of him supporting the movement, much of his writing from that time suggests the promotion of groups like "the brights" (with Hitchens being the only one who outright rejected the idea to my knowledge).

Also Dawkins as "Atheist (within a very reasonable margin of error)" I presume applies to him being an agnostic atheist in refference to the concept of a deity, but a gnostic atheist in response to some gods (e.g. Yahweh). If this is the case, once again you have all 4 of them.

What would probably be a better version of the poll, recognising that many of them overlap would be to replace the option in the poll with the four horsemen themselves, and ask people who`s stances on atheism and theism the reader is most like.

Contrary to the propaganda, we live in probably the least materialistic culture in history. If we cared about the things of the world, we would treat them quite differently. We would be concerned with their materiality. We would be interested in their beginnings and their ends, before and after they left our grasp.

What's "bright"? I remember Dawkins said Atheists should refer to themselves as either "Smart" or "bright" in the same way homosexuals are called "gay" (happy), or something along those terms.

I identity myself as Agnostic Ahtiest.

Well, that's not really true. There are passive atheists, and aggressive atheists, and the weird bunch of atheists (people who are atheists because they think it's "cool").

Of course, none of those really fit in the categories, and a lot of atheists borrow traits from the different groups.

You can say that again. The funniest part - or the most depressing part, depending on which way you look at it - is that there are actually people who think like that.
