Russian Government to Fund Patriotic Video Games

The Russian government has said that it will fund the production of patriotic games, while titles that distort history could be banned in the country.

What does NSG think about this? Brainwashing or Patriotic Education?

I think it might actually be a good move for cultural education, however there is the prevalent fact that Russia could use this to misinform the Russian populace quite a good deal.

State-controlled media uniformly undermines freedom of expression. So, bad thing.

The Pentagon already does this in regards to war films. If they don't like the content, they don't let the film producers use their stuff for free. This seems to be similar, and just as morally questionable.

I don't see the government funded games turning out very fun...especially in a market that is in early stages of its modern video game development. Properly will end up being a waste of funds on their end. I would mandate it to be offered free to play.

What kind of games will they have? Putin Pingpong? Russian Roulette? Happy Fun Vodka Time on the Wii?

Is there a major government you wouldn't expect to help develop "patriotic" war games? A decent amount of them have been leading the charge for some time now.

Ah, Russia. The country that gets insulted - though rarely openly attacked - by western liberals for doing what its population wants.

Said as though this were somehow ironic.

I'm less troubled by the "funding patriotic games" part and more by the "banning 'ahistorical' games" part. Russia seems to be quite ban-happy these days.

Kinda ironic to say for someone with your user picture, don't you think? :p

you don't need to attempt to cry about the liberals in every thread regardless of how relevant it is, you know that, right? i am assuming you are actually referring to a specific piece of legislation that is outside the bounds of this thread. would you like to add your actual opinion on the topic instead of whining about liberals?

How is this any different from the plethora of existing western-made video games that glorify the American army?

Russians already have patriotic anime.

Short clip of the anime "First Squad". Story written by Russians while Japanese provided the graphics.

The difference is that Russia is funding it, while somehow those US military ones popped up naturally.

America's Army begs to differ. Propaganda is propaganda regardless of its funding source.

Also note that many of those games let you play as the opposite side. But yeah, most of them are technically propaganda, but not very powerful versions of it, as they tend to glorify military service in general rather than just America's army.

Not a fan of the idea at all, but it sounds like (not trusting NSers completely) the west does similar things.

America's Army is one (unsuccessful and obscure) game among dozens of privately-funded games about the US military.

Also, there's the part where America doesn't censor games for "historical inaccuracy".
